Ferrari launches the 296 GT3 that represents the future of GT racing at the Prancing Horse. It is the successor to the 488 GT3 based on the 296 GT3, Ferrari's latest and greatest two-seat mid-range rear-engine sports car. Featuring a 120-degree V6 turbocharged powertrain, the 296 GT3 marked Ferrari's return to motorsport with mid-mounted six-cylinder engines such as the 246 SP. Built to meet the needs of "teams, professional drivers and wealthy owners", every detail of the car complies with FIA's new GT3 regulations.
This is a very purposeful racing , with aggressive front aerodynamics shaping the air into a clean, simple rear. The body kit generates 20 percent more downforce than Ferrari's previous-generation GT3 race car. There's no doubt that while we're admiring it, the rich the world over are opening their checkbooks and ordering them. Another highlight of Ferrari's new race car is its cockpit, which offers the driver greater intuitiveness, visibility and accessibility. The steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles offer a new method of shifting gears compared to its 296 GT3 predecessor. The interior was designed from the ground up with input from professional racers and racing industry customers.
At its core, the Ferrari 296 GT3 is a racing engine based on the mill that powered the road car. It's a V6 engine with the turbochargers located inside the V, which brings benefits in terms of packaging, center of gravity and weight. The powertrain has been tuned to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible without sacrificing performance, one of the measures being the alternator mounted on the gearbox to improve compactness. The engine is mated to a new gearbox developed specifically for this race car, which features a single-disc clutch design with six gears and electronic clutch actuation.
When CFD simulations were first released in 2020, the concept project for the 296 GT3 race car first appeared at Ferrari's development center. Now in the final stages of testing, the machine has completed tens of thousands of miles of evaluation. The official motorsport christening is scheduled for the 2023 Daytona 24 Hours endurance race. And starting next year, it will also appear in the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
