In 2011, he became the vice president of hardware engineering for Mac . In 2013, Doug Field joined Tesla as the senior vice president of engineering. In 2018, he returned to Apple and became the head of the "Project Titan" (a self-driving car research and development program).
According to people familiar with the matter, after Doug Field left, Apple has appointed Kevin Lynch as the new head of the automotive project. Kevin Lynch formally joined Apple in 2013 and has been responsible for software development of Apple Watch and health business. Some analysts believe that Apple’s appointment of Kevin Lynch to take over the car project indicates that the company’s focus is still on basic software and autonomous driving technology.
However, foreign media reported that due to the unsatisfactory progress of negotiations between Apple and automakers, these large automakers are reluctant to become Apple's foundries.
