Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is pushing for details of the new power unit rules to be finalized as soon as possible.
The V6 hybrid turbo powerplant currently launched in 2014 has been frozen until 2026. The new power unit rules to be adopted by
are expected to simplify the design by removing the MGU-H, but will also increase the importance of the electrical components of the hybrid unit through the upgraded MGU-K. In addition, fully sustainable fuels will be introduced.
Toto said after the Canadian Grand Prix: "We very much hope that the engine regulations will come through really quickly because we want to do this work as quickly as possible. But they also need to do it according to the rules."
Wolff wants Mercedes ’s high-performance powertrain division will begin work on the new 2026 power units this summer. In addition to the current four manufacturers, the Volkswagen Group proposed by Porsche and Audi is also discussing these regulations, and they are also preparing to build power units according to the new rules.
Toto admitted: “It’s not going to be easy for existing and new power unit suppliers to actually agree and sign off on this. But I hope it doesn’t drag on too long. I hope we can Do it in the summer so that we can start working on the new engine in the autumn."
Ferrari team principal Matti Binotto is not worried about the new regulations being a hindrance. He said: "We have not received any information yet that the vote will be postponed. There will be a World Council meeting at the end of June, Austria will also continue to meet, and I am sure we will reach an agreement soon."
