The vast universe is full of infinite mystery, and human beings have never stopped exploring the universe. From the ancient " Mountains and Seas " telling the concept of space-time and time of the universe to the current Chang'e-5 manned landing on the moon, all of which write about human thinking and exploration of the universe and the great progress made.
In the eyes of ordinary people, the earth is huge, but if you look at the entire universe, it is just a drop in the ocean. Yesterday when I was sitting on the plane, I was thinking: Milky Way contains 100 billion to 400 billion stars and a large number of star clusters , nebula, etc., and the earth is just one of the small planets, which is very small; if you put it in the entire universe to observe, it will be even smaller. Therefore, the universe is an extremely vast space.
There is currently no unified statement about this universe, whether in science or religion - scientific views are constantly being updated, and everyone has no consensus. Today we will take a look at how they understand the universe from a Buddhist perspective.
The universe is infinite
Buddhism believes that taking the world we live in as a unit, a thousand such worlds are called small thousand worlds; a thousand small thousand worlds are called the middle thousand worlds; a thousand middle thousand worlds are called the big thousand worlds, that is, one billion small worlds. There are countless worlds, which shows that Buddhism had the concept of infinite worlds more than two thousand years ago.
can only be described in "incredible"
. Many people may be very surprised to see these numbers about the universe: "How come there are so many!" I heard that some students in college who specialize in cosmology, especially young students, find it too incredible when they see such huge numbers and infinite worldview. Although incredible, this is indeed the truth of the universe.
Scientist Hawking After long-term research, he also found that the vastness and depth of this universe are far beyond imagination. So he quoted the language of a writer and said: "The universe is even more incredible than I imagined." In this regard, I think if the scientific community continues to explore, it will find more common ground with Buddhism.
In short, as far as the universe is concerned, its vastness is far beyond human imagination, and it contains an infinite world.
Every universe has age
For the small universe - the universe space where we live, the scientific community has always paid great attention to it, and has explored its origin, evolution, destruction, etc. There are various speculations about its beginning, but quite a lot of people agree with the Big Bang theory, believing that this universe began with a big explosion about 12 billion to 15 billion years ago.
Buddhism also studies the small universe, believing that it has four stages: completion, existence, destruction and emptiness. The small universe was originally a large void, and then the dust of wind appeared, and then the universe slowly formed. Although it did not originate from the Big Bang, there was also a formation process, and this process was very long. After the universe is formed, it will stay in the twenty-two-mid kalpas and then enter the stage of destruction. Regarding the destruction of the universe, some theories believe that many stars die through spontaneous combustion, while Buddhism also says that the universe is burned by fire. After the destruction of the universe, it becomes a void space, and this stage also lasts for twenty mid-catastrophes.
If you have a deeper understanding, you will know that the viewpoint of the universe being formed, living, destruction and emptiness is closer to some statements in modern astronomy.
At the same time, Buddhism believes that in countless universes, some are forming, some are settled, some are destroying, and ages vary. This can also correspond to the results of astronomy research.
The appearance of the distant planet
Scientist Bruno has an important contribution, which is to propose the "Infinite Theory". This theory holds that the universe is infinite, not just one earth and one sun, but countless planets and countless worlds. This is consistent with the Buddhist viewpoint. Many scriptures mainly in the Buddhist scriptures "Avatamsaka Sutra" have long mentioned that there is a "number of sands in the Ganges River" in the world. Ganges River Sands is a metaphor, and the meaning of it is infinite. Moreover, " Huazang World " also made a vivid description of various worlds, which said: The karma of sentient beings is different, and the worlds they see are also all kinds of - some worlds are round, some square, some vortex manifold, some river-shaped, some above, and some below...
Of course, this is just a single word. I believe that with the advancement of technology, the mysterious veil of the universe will eventually be lifted, and we look forward to this day coming soon.
