The next day, Master Hongren avoided everyone and came to the mill. He saw a big stone tied to the waist of Huineng , and was working hard to say, "People who seek Buddhist teachings forget their bodies in order to understand Buddhism. This is exactly like this! So he asked Huineng: 'Is the rice ripe?"
Huineng replied, "The rice has been ripe for a long time, and it's just a sieve and filter."
Master Hongren hit the stone three times with a Zen stick and left. Huineng immediately understood the master's profound meaning and came to Master Hongren's room at midnight.
only see Hongren Master used a cassock to cover all the doors and windows around him, and strictly prevent others from seeing it. Then he began to explain " Diamond Sutra " to Huineng.
When Master Hongren said the sentence "You should not dwell on anything and give birth to your mind", Huineng immediately realized: In fact, all things in the world cannot be separated from the pure self-nature. So he reported to Master Hongren: "I really don't expect that the nature of all sentient beings is originally pure! It is neither born nor destroyed! It is perfect and complete! It won't be shaken! I really can't imagine that the nature of all sentient beings can produce endless worldly things!"
Master Hongren heard Huineng's words and knew that he had truly attained enlightenment and realized his true nature. He then taught him: "If you cannot recognize the pure mind, then learning any Buddhist teachings will be useless. If you truly realize your pure original mind, you can truly realize the true nature of the true nature, and you can be called a real man, a teacher of heaven and man, and a Buddha. "
Hongren preached the Dharma to Huineng in the middle of the night, and no one knew about this.
So, Master Hongren passed on the Zen mind method and robe and bowl to Huineng, and said: "You are now the sixth generation of Zen patriarch. Please take good care of yourself, try your best to protect the Zen meridians, save all sentient beings in the world, carry forward the Zen teachings and spread them to future generations. Never interrupt or extinction! "
Master Hongren then said: "Please listen to my verse: Plant the seeds that can become Buddhas in the eight consciousnesses of sentient beings. Since the seeds of becoming Buddhas have been planted on the earth, as long as the opportunity is ripe, the fruit of becoming Buddhas will naturally bear. For those ruthless plants and trees, there is no so-called lower seeds, because they have no self-nature, so they have nothing to be born!
Verse says:
sentient beings come to seed, and the cause and effect will still be born;
ruthlessness has no seeds, and there is no nature and no birth.
