Zen Master Foyin (1032-1098), a native of Raozhou, Jiangxi Province, was an eminent monk in the Northern Song Dynasty. His courtesy name was Jue Lao and his name was Le Yuan, so he was also known as "Zen Master Liao Yuan" and "Jue Lao". The surname is Lin, and he has been a scholarly family for generations and is a prominent local family. When he was three years old, he could recite the "Analects of Confucius" and wrote a complete chapter and quote classics. When he was five years old, he could recite three thousand poems, so he was known as a "child prodigy".
When I was a teenager, I learned from my teachers Confucian " Book of Songs ", " Shangshu ", "Zhou Li", " Zhouyi ", "Spring and Autumn Annals", and read the classics, history, and the collections of scholars, history, and insight into the changes in the past and present. He has a quick mind, a grand temperament, and a leisurely charm.
Later, because he read " Shurangama Sutra ", he was deeply attracted by the Buddhist emptiness and wonders, so he joined his master and became a monk with the Dharma name " Fuyin ".
After becoming a monk, Buddha Seal went deep into the Three Collections of Buddhism and realized the wonderful truths of reality. Later, he visited Master Ming and visited Master June, Yuantong Temple at the age of nineteen. Master Ju Ne praised him very much and praised him as a "Talent of Buddhism".
Soon after, the abbot of Chengtian Temple in Jiujiang, Jiangxi was vacant, and Ju Ne recommended Foyin to the county magistrate to serve as the abbot of Chengtian Temple (the abbot was recommended by the Buddhist temple and appointed by the government). The county magistrate thought he was too young and might be incompetent.
Zen Master June said: Although Leyuan is young, his virtue is high and even if there are thousands of monks, they may not be worthy of him.
Fuyin was then appointed as the abbot of Chengtian Temple at the age of twenty-eight.
A few years later, Foyin went to Lushan to visit Master Shanxian, Kaixian Temple. Shanxian rarely praises others, but he only praises Foyin. Under the guidance of Zen Master Shanxian, Foyin penetrated into the wonderful principles of Kong Sect and . Because of his wisdom and understanding, he was praised as a "heroic monk" in all directions.
Because Foyin was born into a prominent family in Jiangxi, he often sang with the scholars and officials at that time through articles and poems. Among them, he had close contact with famous scholars Su Dongpo . The two of them are monks and laymen, with poetry and prose exchanges, and Zen interests are mutually evident, leaving behind many interesting and thought-provoking stories.
The two first dated when Su Dongpo was demoted to Huangzhou. At that time, Foyin's abbot Guizong Temple. Su Dongpo was demoted for his sins. At that time, many people were unwilling to interact with him, but Foyin often interacted with him and visited Chibi twice. Su Dongpo wrote the masterpiece " Red Cliff Fu ".

Later, Foyin stationed in Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang. At this time, Su Dongpo happened to be the prefect of Hangzhou. He passed by Jinshan Temple, so he went to visit Foyin specifically.
At that time, Foyin was sitting in the room with his disciples, full of seats and no empty seats.
Foyin wanted to try Dongpo's Zen technique, so he joked to him: There is no place to sit here!
Dongpo asked: Can you temporarily borrow the four elements of monks as the Zen bed?
Fuyin said: If the mountain monk makes a turn of words, if he can answer it immediately without thinking, please take a seat. If you have to think about it before answering, please leave the jade belt between the layman's waist.
Dongpo is also a talented and quick-witted man. He said confidently: I wish you will be given a question!
Foyin asked: Mr. Su intends to borrow the four elements of mountain monks as a Zen bed, but the four elements of mountain monks are originally empty and the five yins do not exist. Where will the lay Buddhists borrow?
Dongpo said a moment and was about to think about it. Foyin immediately ordered the waiter to collect the jade belt, Yongzhen Mountain Gate!
Dongpo had to untie the jade belt and count it as offering to Foyin. There are many stories about Foyin and Su Dongpo, and I will not list them one by one here. Su Dongpo's poetry and prose are rich in philosophy, which is largely due to the influence of Foyin.
When Foyin was fifty-five years old, the leader of the Buddhist sect, Master Yitian, came to China to meditate and ask questions. Every time he went, the abbot of the temple would receive diligently, just like receiving princes and ministers. Once, Yitian visited Jinshan Temple. Foyin sat upright on the Zen bed and peacefully accepted Yitian's kneeling ceremony to him. Yang Jie, who was accompanying him, was very surprised and asked forward why Foyin did not answer with generous gifts.
Foyin said: Although Yitian is a foreign monk, he is a monk. When he arrives at , the ten directions of the jungle , he must follow the ritual of becoming a monk and cannot be changed. All the surnames became monks and were both Buddhists of the Buddhist sect, so there was no distinction between noble and humble.Are monks from foreign countries the nobles of the Shu family?
Yang Jie replied: It is rare to treat guests with such humble manners. Although the rules of the school are strict, you cannot be rude to foreign guests. Is Mr. Jue really the original intention of merits like this different from all directions?
Fuyin said seriously: Just follow the righteous path and follow the world, and those who practice Taoism do not do it. If there is a general insult to the Dharma, the great masters of all directions will have already lost sight. If they do not uphold the great Chinese national character, how can we show that our great Chinese national football team can learn from the Dharma?
After hearing this, the officials of the imperial court praised Zen Master Foyin for his understanding of the general principles.
Zhenjiang Jinshan Temple
Zen Master Foyin once traveled to the capital. The emperor heard his name for a long time and gave him a piece of high-quality patchwork tributed by North Korea.
A guest said to the Buddha Seal: "Ah, good! It has never happened. Try to take his fast with me, follow his hooks, lift it up and boost it, and then the east will be the Yi Yi, the west will reach the Mei Gu, the south will be the Youdu, and the north will belong to the Youdu, and the north will be in the Youdu line. "
Fo Yin smiled and said: "It's so bad, the words of my words are so bad. I look at it with the Dharma eyes, and I have to say that Kong has an infinite world, and all the possibilities of all sentient beings. The clothes and lines of the clothes and lines of the cave are all the worlds. In this way, the 80-year-old man shines, and the light of my Buddha is shining with the sages of my lord, and the virtues of my king are like a possibilities of the sea, and a big earth will be blocked with the foot of the Youdu City in Yi Mei Gu, and the foot of the Youdu City in Jiaozhi City? You should know that this monk is neither big nor small, neither short nor long, nor heavy nor light, Neither thin nor thick, neither color nor empty. In all worlds, if you break your glue and fall into your fingers, this is not cold; gravel flows gold, this is not hot; 5 turbidities roaming, this is not dirty; kimonogenic fire is still alive, this is not broken. How can you have a thoughtful mind and have bad thoughts? "
After hearing this, Su Dongpo praised, " hiding it, and I saw it, but I didn't see the master. I don't see the master, but I don't see the master. I don't see the master. But the master and the master are neither one nor two. I look at it, and I don't see the dragon and elephant."
Foyin Zen Master, sitting in the temple nine times, exemplifying the great Dharma, and virtue is widely used, which deeply admired the four groups, and his voice shocked the court and the country. He showed silence in the first year of 1098 of Zhezong Yuanfu (1098).
