First of all, about things like right concentration, mindfulness and enlightenment.
Why should a person sit there and meditate, enter the state of mindfulness , or maintain a state of steadfastness? In fact, it is to turn off the default mode in our minds. What is the default mode? Even if you don’t have anything to focus on, your brain will think randomly, just the noise at the bottom of the body that keeps thinking randomly. This is called the default mode. This default mode network will consume a lot of energy in our human body.
The deep peace is when you can lower this default mode and enter a deep peace, you will find that someone can get bliss and ecstasy. He had experienced many times after sitting meditation for a long time, and had such a feeling, a feeling of happiness.
What is enlightenment? Enlightenment in Buddhism is to get rid of the two illusions that cause people to suffer. One is an external hallucination, the other is an internal hallucination. It means that we are liberated from the feeling of suffering. Therefore, the so-called pursuit of enlightenment actually means that you can see through those troubles, those pains, and those feelings that are false alarms in your brain. There is no need for you to react so strongly to this. This is the process of people pursuing enlightenment. Of course, this is a suggestion given by a non-Buddhist, a psychologist.
When people are doing introspection looking inward, the solution is whether you accept three-phase seal . The three Dharma seals are impermanence, suffering and selflessness. This author skips over impermanence and suffering directly. Why? He said that this is not necessary to prove it, and everyone can accept it.
What is impermanence? Impermanence is change. I don't believe anyone can come out and say that some things will not change, and will never change. impossible. If you believe in this matter, you accept impermanence. Many people will feel terrifying and nervous when they mention the word impermanence, and think that impermanence is probably a car accident or illness, which is called impermanence. No, change is impermanence.
What is suffering? What is suffering? You are pursuing something, but you can never stop. No one doesn’t need more desires because I bought a big house. You just think so before you buy it. But after buying, it needs to be bigger and better decoration. With better decoration, famous paintings, better porcelain, etc.
If you have been tortured by this feeling, then you must know what suffering is. Therefore, you don’t need to argue about these two. No matter Eastern or Western people, they will definitely be able to accept impermanence and suffering.
The most difficult thing people accept is the concept of "no self", which is why do you say there is no me? I clearly felt that there was a me that could touch me. I wanted to eat, I was hungry, and my reputation was on TV. Look, it's all me. How can you make me feel "no self"?
First of all, we trace back to the root of "no self". When the Buddha first talked about "no self", he once gave a teaching in the "No Self Sutra". He said, what are we humans composed of? Five aggregates , all five aggregates are empty.
What five aggregates are there? The five aggregates of form, feeling, thinking, volition and consciousness. Then the Buddha began to argue why the five aggregates are empty. He said that the basic logic is this: If we think that the "physical body" is me - what is the "physical body"? It’s our own body. If you think this is me, then it’s good. I won’t do anything that is bad for me, right? ! This is what you can control, and then you can control it, and you will not do anything that is unfavorable to you. But our "physical body" often does things that are not good for us. It will get sick, it will age, it will break, causing you all kinds of problems. Therefore, the "physical body" is definitely not you.
Is our "feeling" me? If our "feelings" were me, "feelings" would not do things that were not good for us, and "feelings" would not bother us, but a large number of our troubles came from "feelings". The Buddha used this method to demonstrate to you the five parts of form, feeling, thinking, action and consciousness, which are composed of us, one by one - none of them are you, and you cannot control them. You will find that these things are not you.
So, this author said, this is too difficult to understand. So what should I do? He gave a reconciliational opinion. He said, what is "no self"? It is that "I" does not exist in the ultimate sense, but it does exist in the traditional sense. Why do you say that
? Even though the Buddha always tells you "no self", he often says that you will benefit, he will benefit, and sentient beings will benefit. Since there is "no self", where did you come from and where did you come from? Therefore, this object is in the traditional sense, and "no self" is in the ultimate sense.
You need to understand this, and you will understand it by thinking about a metaphor: only when you possess teeth will the toothache hurt you, and only when you regard your teeth as part of yourself will the toothache hurt you. This means that when you can apply the feeling of "no self" to your life, you will find that you are completely different.
So, why do we need to deceive ourselves? Why do we convince ourselves that there is an "I"? Here we also have the significance of evolution theory . Anyone who uses evolutionary methods to solve these hallucinations will call it "Darwin's Light". We use the "Darwin Light" to illuminate these concepts that we could not understand in the past.
Why does natural selection design such a brain that makes people deceive themselves? "There is one answer: If we believe in ourselves, it helps convince others to believe us and prove to others that we are consistent, rational, controlled actors, which is of course beneficial to us. Or, more accurately, the genetic inheritance of our ancestors of our hunting-gatherer era." It makes us look like someone who can control ourselves.
So, you see, after we develop the concept of "I" in the process of evolution, we are independent of others, so that we can possess materials, build families, and protect ourselves. This concept of "I" helps us survive, but it pays accordingly and it pays tuition. Tuition is the pain we have to endure.
Originally, it did not have so much pain. You don’t need to be too attached to this body, but you must be attached to it. Therefore, Laozi said, “The reason I have great patients is that I have a body.” The meaning is: Why do I have so much pain? Because I have this body, I want to accept this body, and my pain will exist. This is the explanation of evolutionary psychology.
