Zen monks can't figure out what she means. This incident reached Zhaozhou's ears. Zhaozhou said: OK, I'll go and see what kind of old woman it is. He walked to the tea shop and asked the old woman how to go to Mount Tai. Of course she told him to go straight, and when Zhaozhou also did the same thing as other monks, the old woman said: A good monk, he took the same way as others.
When Zhaozhou returned to the monks, he said: Today I saw her thoroughly!
We may ask: Since Zhaozhou has not done anything different from other monks, why can he see the old woman thoroughly?
This question is something that each of us has to answer by ourselves.
In short, what Zen requires us to do is: not to stay in imagination, but to experience it. Some say that going back to the original intention is Zen, some say that meditation is Zen, I say that only after experiencing and verifying is Zen, and only in this way can we seek enlightenment for ourselves.
