Introduction: There is a popular word in contemporary online media - enlightenment. So what is enlightenment? In fact, everyone has their own understanding of enlightenment. This is nothing to discuss. What I want to say is that just as we are divided into primary school, middle school and university, there are also levels of enlightenment. If you understand this truth, you will not be easily confused by some celebrities on the Internet who talk about enlightenment. Many people also take it for granted that the current concept of enlightenment and epiphany seem to be the same. In fact, epiphany is far from as simple as people think. After epiphany, it does not mean that everything will be fine. Regarding this point, " Surangama Sutra " has a very good saying: The principle is enlightened suddenly, and it is eliminated by multiplying the enlightenment; if the matter is not eliminated suddenly, the sequence will be exhausted. There are steps to practice.

How can we become enlightened? Everyone's fate, encounters and experiences are different, and there is no fixed law, so Li Wukong will not discuss it. What I will describe in the next few series of articles is the reason why people are most likely not to be enlightened. When we were in school, when we were doing multiple-choice questions and encountered questions we didn’t know how to solve, didn’t we often use the elimination method? After eliminating the reasons for not being enlightened, the remaining possibility is the possibility of enlightenment! In this issue, we will talk about one of the reasons why it is not easy for ordinary people to become enlightened - they despise the classics.

People tend not to cherish things that are easily obtained.

In today's era, transportation is convenient, the Internet is developed, and the printing industry is popular. It can be said that it is very easy to meet someone or find a book.

It is rare to find a wise master (a wise master, not a famous master, and a famous master may not be truly enlightened). What we can rely on most if we want to achieve enlightenment are actually the classics passed down by our ancestors and sages. Except for a few sect secret books that have not been circulated, we can easily obtain most of the classics. However, because they are so easy to obtain, many people have a feeling of contempt.

Speaking of enlightenment and enlightenment, we have to mention Master Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. He is a typical representative of enlightenment. How do people become enlightened?

After selling firewood, Huineng accidentally heard a customer chanting sutras. At this time, " Altar Sutra " said this: Huineng's heart was enlightened as soon as he heard the sutras (enlightenment is only the elementary level) , you will understand later). After asking the guest, I found out that this sutra is called "The Diamond Sutra". The guest heard it from Master Hongren, the Fifth Patriarch of Dongchan Temple. After hearing this, Huineng wanted to see the Fifth Patriarch.

Although some things are not explained in the book, we can infer that the guest did not have the Diamond Sutra in his hands at that time and only recited a few sentences from it. If the guest has a scripture in his hand, Huineng will definitely ask him to read it again even though he is illiterate. One of the reasons why he wants to see the Fifth Patriarch is that he wants to listen to the Diamond Sutra!

In order to seek advice from the Fifth Patriarch in person and to listen to the Diamond Sutra, the Fifth Patriarch spent more than a month from what is now Guangdong to Dongchan Temple in Huangmei County, Hubei Province. Just to listen to a book of scripture, you can travel a long distance and sleep in the open for more than a month. How many people have such sincerity now?

As soon as Huineng went to Dongchan Temple and met the Fifth Patriarch, did he get his wish and hear the Diamond Sutra? No! In order to temper Hui Neng's character, the Fifth Patriarch made Hui Neng work for more than a month, breaking firewood and stepping on the earthenware. Later, after the gatha incident, Huineng heard the "Diamond Sutra" he had dreamed of as he wished, and then there was a scene that shocked the ages in the history of Zen - Huineng heard that "there should be no abiding and the mind should be born" After one sentence, the words are revealed (the ultimate enlightenment).

Just to listen to the Diamond Sutra, Huineng can be said to have gone through a lot of hardships. The so-called sincerity leads to gold and stone. This is the secret of enlightenment of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng .

If Huineng could hear the complete version of the words in the Diamond Sutra when he heard the guests reciting them, he might not have reached the state of great enlightenment if he was careless and careless.

It is precisely because opportunities are hard to come by that we can imagine that when Hui Neng listened to the Fifth Patriarch’s sermons, he must have been completely absorbed and highly concentrated, and did not dare to wander away for a moment. In this state, coupled with the karma of his past life, This created the eternal legend of Huineng's enlightenment.

is really a legend through the ages. Modern people’s ears are almost scratched when they hear “One should have no place to live but his mind”. There are many people who can memorize the Diamond Sutra, but there are only a few people. Enlightened?

Don’t listen to the nonsense of some people on the Internet. People who can achieve enlightenment are as rare as in ancient times and today.

Huineng didn’t know how to read, so he had to listen to what others said. If he wanted to listen to the scriptures, he had to travel for more than a month through mountains and rivers, which was very difficult. In today's era of popular culture, it can be said that our conditions are many times better than Huineng's.

Look at Huineng, and then look at how we look at classics now. Some bought it as a luxurious hardcover edition for decoration; some bought it as incense and tribute; some seemed careless and placed randomly; some read it half-heartedly; and some criticized it while reading (if you can’t understand it, just say it is sour) Grape). In short, there is one sentence: despise the classics!

I am very proud and confused! Such a desire for enlightenment is probably a daydream.

Read Buddhist scriptures as if the Buddha is in front of you, and read Taoism as if Laojun appears. This is the attitude you should have when viewing classics.

If a person doesn’t respect the classics, why should he be asked to understand the classics?

Wukong's wishful pen will light up tomorrow's affairs.
