The 84,000 "Buddha Pagoda" of Sanxue Temple in Jintang Qixian Mountain

Among the cultural relics of Jintang Qixian Mountain, the 84,000 "Buddha Pagodas" hidden in the Fahai Temple of the Upper Temple of Sanxue Temple are the most precious.

After burning incense, enter Fahai Temple, a stone pillar engraved with "Ancient Temple of Infinite Pagoda Town" stands on the side of Duobao Pagoda.

But the real "eighty-four thousand Buddha Buddha Pagoda" is on the hillside in front of the Buddhist scripture hall in the back. Because the back mountain was not open to tourists during the maintenance period, after obtaining the consent of Master Chonglun, I was able to go to the back mountain of the Daxiong Hall to see the 84,000 "Buddha Pagoda".

Along the steps, it is the Qixian Shishi Dojo handed down in the early years. The Taoist Temple is actually a stone house built in the Song Dynasty. Since the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the eminent monks of the Sanxue Temple have been meditating in this stone room. In 1988, the Jintang County Cultural Bureau listed the Qixian Shishi Taoist Temple as a county-level cultural relics protection unit.

The stone chamber dojo and inscriptions are under maintenance.

Although there are no 600-year-old Japanese treasures on the forehead of the Taoist Temple, the stone room is carved on the forehead It is eroded by wind and rain and can still be clearly identified.

(Samen is a Buddhist noun, Sanskrit sramana, transliterated as "Shiromona", "Saramona", etc. It is the transliteration of Samane in the Western Khuzi language and samana in the Khotan language. Some books are also written It is "Samena", "Sangmen", " 娑门" and so on.The free translation is "industrious, meritorious, defiant, diligent, quiescent, pure, restless, relieving the mind, relieving evil, diligent, cultivating, poor, lacking" and so on. )

The "Buddha Pagoda" of the Japanese monk Dongsheng Seal

According to the "Jintang County Chronicles", "Sanxue Temple, in the (county) rule (chengxiang) Dongsishili Sanxue Mountain, the beginning was nothing Examination. Since of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it has three monasteries, namely the upper, middle and lower monasteries. The upper temple is named Fahai, the middle temple is named Puji, and the lower temple is named Guangji. Ming Hongwuzhong, ( 朱元zhang) Sanxue, Yunding bestowed on the Shu clan ( Zhu Chun), it was'Jinyanzhuang', which was renamed'Qixian Temple'."

Ming Hongwu 23rd year, Zhu Yuanzhang's eleventh son Zhu Chunlai Chuanjiu Fan, with the aid of the imperial court, began in the 27th year of Hongwu and lasted four years to build the immeasurable pagoda of Shizun.

The pagoda is built behind the Daxiong Hall of Fahai Temple, Shangsi Temple of Sanxue Temple. The whole pagoda consists of a tower base, sub-tower and top tower. The base of the tower is constructed of asymmetric, concentric, six-story, octagonal foundation with strips of stone.

There are a total of 168 sub-towers. Each sub-tower has a tower base at the bottom, a tower body at the center, and a tower cover at the top, all of which are octagonal.

The tower body is divided into 16 grids on each side, and each grid is engraved with 4 small towers on 13 floors; the sixth grid is carved with small Buddha statues on the east, west, north and south sides. Excluding the position occupied by the Buddha statues, there are 500 relief miniature towers in each tower. There are a total of eighty-four miniature towers in a thousand towers. The top tower is built in the octagonal center of the uppermost layer of the tower base, and is divided into three parts: the tower seat, the tower inscription, and the tower top. Each part is engraved with twisted branches and double diamond patterns. There are also Buddha statues and tangled thread sculptures on the pagoda.

After Zhu Chun built the 84,000 "Buddha Pagodas", Zhu Yuanzhang sent the monk Si Zuo Shanshi Dayou to write the pagoda record, and the Japanese Shamen Dongsheng Shudan and seal the forehead, In order to record the beginning and end of its construction, the picture is permanent.

Dayou was a monk in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. As the monk's secretary Zuo Shanshi (equivalent to the president of the National Buddhist Association), he is mainly responsible for the examination and assessment of monks across the country.

Dongsheng was a Japanese eminent monk who studied Buddhist scriptures in China and Zhu Yuanzhang highly regarded him. Two eminent monks from China and Japan came to Jintang Qixian Temple to write pagoda notes and for the "Buddha Pagoda", which shows that Zhu Yuanzhang's love for his son Zhu Chun and his appreciation and affirmation of the "Buddha Pagoda" .

Dayou wrote in the "Stone Pagodas of the Qixian Mountain Taoist Temple": "The analysis of the immeasurable pagoda of Shizun is 84,000. If you combine it, you will be one. Those who see and hear will believe in each other. , From the faith to the heart: the small sees the big, the big sees the small; one is infinite, and infinite is one. With the 84,000 pagodas built by Ashoka, they are distributed in the heaven and on the earth. The ancient is not the present, it is not empty or there, but the wish is vast, and the merits are all indispensable."

After Dayou wrote the "Stone Pagoda of the Qixian Mountain Taoist Temple", he was promoted by the Japanese Shamen Dongsheng Shudan and sealed the forehead. Le stone stele is grandly consecrated.

The "Buddha Pagoda" is a seven-level eight-sided, octagonal column. The bottom side is 6.8 meters long, the above layers gradually shrink by 0.8 meters, and the height difference of each layer is 0.4 meters. There are 6 towers on each side of the bottom floor, totaling 48; descending upwards, 40 on the second floor, 32 on the third floor, 24 on the fourth floor, 16 on the fifth floor, and 8 on the sixth floor, totaling 168. tower. A top tower was built on the seventh floor of the tower to lead the overall situation. The name of Sakyado Pagoda is engraved on the front side. Various Buddha statues are engraved on the seven sides. Viewed from either side of the octagon, it forms an isosceles triangle, and when viewed horizontally, it is arranged in rows and obliquely. The design is novel, the shape is peculiar and exquisite.

It turns out that 500 small towers are engraved on each tower, and 168 times 500 is exactly 84,000 towers. One tower summarizes the 84,000 towers built by Ashoka in his life.

One of the "Four Masters of the Early Tang Dynasty", Wang Bo , who wrote " Preface to the Pavilion of the King of Teng " In a poem "You Fanyu Sanxuesi",This is how the Sanxue Temple is described: "The incense (apricot) pavilion is covered with a green stone, and the carved platform controls the purple cen. Ye Qishan has a narrow road, and the flowers are deep in the wild altar. Luo Poro dwells in Zen shadows, and Songmen listens to Sanskrit. Let’s enjoy and wash away the troubles.”

Wang Bo’s description of Sanxueshan was well received by Chen Degong, , Ji Xiaolan and others.

The monk of the Sanxue Temple was born in the early 1930s and was a monk at the Chonglun Temple in the early 1930s. The temple went from barrenness to the era when the country where fireworks flourished, and the country implemented religious policies, and personally participated in the expansion of temples, afforestation, and beautification of the environment. Now Sanxue Temple has gradually gained a reputation among Buddhist temples in western Sichuan.
