When we walked into the temple, we must have seen an icon named Garan Bodhisattva .
Why does Garan Bodhisattva appear in front of everyone in the image of Guan Gong?
We checked the relevant information and listened to the story here.
As everyone knows, the two great guardians of Buddhism, Weituo Bodhisattva and Jialan Bodhisattva. Let us first understand these two protectors.
Wei Tuo Bodhisattva ---Behind Maitreya Bodhisattva is Wei Tuo Bodhisattva. He faces the main hall to express the protection of the Three Jewels. He is busy all day to protect the practitioners, to make his permanent residence prosper, and the Falun often turns.
There are several postures of Pack Bodhisattva. One is that the left hand is on the waist and the right hand is holding a treasure pestle ( vajra ). Baochu arrives on the ground, this gesture means ‘stop single’, which means that all guests from the ten directions, including monks and lay people, come to the temple and welcome them, but it implies that the temple does not accept foreign guests. The other posture is to put the palms together, with the treasure pestle placed horizontally on the palm, with kindness on the face. This bodhisattva welcomes everyone to place orders.
Garan Bodhisattva ---- Guan Gong (Guan Yu), who is often called, is also a protector god. In the Three Kingdoms period, Guan Gong was already a benevolent and loyal figure. He originally believed in Taoism . After his death, Emperor Shenzong named him the Lord of the Three Realms (Desire Realm, Physical Realm, and Colorless Realm). Guan Gong often appeared in heaven and on earth. In the Sui Dynasty, the wise master met Guan Gong to disturb him in Dingzhong. The master’s concentration was very good. For Guan Gong, Guan Gong converted to the Three Jewels, held the Five Precepts, and vows to be a protector of the Dharma in the temple. Garan Bodhisattva.
Guan Yu, a famous Shu Han general in the Three Kingdoms period,He was originally a brave and invincible military commander, but in the end he would actually appear in the temple, incarnate as Garan Bodhisattva, and become one of the two guardians of the Buddhist temple. So, what is going on here? In fact, there is a bizarre story.
Back then, Guan Yu besieged Xiangfan, captured and banned , cut Pound, Megatron China, Cao Cao was the most brilliant moment that Guan Yu wanted to move. . But then Cao Cao sent Xu Huang to reinforce him. Soochow Lv Meng attacked Jingzhou again, and Guan Yu was defeated and killed. Guan Yu's head was given to Cao Cao by and Sun Quan, and was buried in Luoyang by Cao Cao, while his body was buried in Dangyang by Sun Quan. Therefore, the folks also call Guan Yu "Headrest in Luoyang, lying in the sun, soul Hometown".
Guan Yu is famous for his loyalty. His story did not end because of his death, but just started. Legend has it that the founder of Tiantai Zong of the Sui Dynasty was meditating, and suddenly a dark cloud appeared in the southern sky. There was a dark cloud riding a red horse. The Qinglong Yanyuedao was headless. He walked and said, "My head is here. Where, where is my head."
When the wise master saw that it was Guan Yu looking for his head, he asked Guan Yu in return: "Chang Yun, he has fought five battles and defeated six generals in his life. Zhu Yanliang killed so many people, and they also demanded your head. What can you do?" Guan Yu lowered his head and said nothing. Afterwards, wise master told him a lot of Buddhism and persuaded him to convert to Buddhism and be the guardian of Buddhism. After listening to Guan Yu, he gladly accepted and vowed to serve as the protector of Buddhism, called "Galan Bodhisattva".Together with Wei Tuo Bodhisattva, they are also known as the two protector gods of Buddhist temples.
It is more of a legend about Guan Yu’s incarnation Garan Bodhisattva, and the main reason why Guan Yu can become a protector of Buddhism is that people respect his loyalty, and the people deify him as the incarnation and patron saint of justice. And Buddhism complied with the will of the people and elevated him to "Gallan Bodhisattva".
Guan Yu's life is loyal and brave, steadfast, unmoved by gold and silver treasures, worshipped by the three religions of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, the only one in ancient and modern times. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guan Yu was extremely prominent. He was honored as the "King of Wu" and the "Sage of Wu". Not only did he serve as the head of the security bureau in the Buddhist world, he was the honor of the Garan Temple. Guan Gong is regarded as the god of wealth as the guardian of their wealth.
However, people in the world only know that they blindly worship the God of Wealth Guan Gong in order to obtain wealth, but they ignore the virtues of Guan Gong's loyalty and faith, and do whatever it takes to seek wealth, betray righteousness and profit, so how can you get the Garan Bodhisattva. The true blessing is really sad.
