Shishouke in Qi Ye
Shishouke, an Huke , a common surname, is Ji, a native of Hulao (now Sishui Town, Xingyang, Henan Province). He was proficient in ancient Chinese poetry and books, read Buddhist scriptures, and later went to the capital to pay attention to enlightenment and advocate silent reading. This is very different from the Buddhist community at that time, and it has attracted criticism from some people. But the true method will eventually be promoted. At about forty years, he met the monk Bodhidharma of the Indian Zhu traveling around Songluo. Huike admired his Zen thoughts very much, so he worshipped him as his teacher, followed him to study Taoism for six years, and studied the One Vehicle. He integrates both principles and affairs, and has no stagnation. Wisdom is out of the mind, has outstanding understanding, and is willing to learn in reality. After achieving the purity of the purity, he is willing to learn in a real way. , He was in a vague and conscientious in practicing Taoism in the Songluo area. However, because of his early reputation, scholars from all over the world came to ask for Taoism and study and requested a teacher. Huike was always instructed to the students, and his reputation grew and naturally became famous all over the world.
Tianping in the early years of Tianping to Yedu to promote Zen. At that time, some people who were stagnant of literature and righteousness had criticized them. There was a Zen master named Daoheng who had a great influence in the Yedu area. He had more than a thousand disciples under his sect. He accused Huike of Zen as "demonic words" and sent wise disciples to Huike to argue with him. However, when they heard Huike's teachings, they were calm and filled with sadness, and they never wanted to go back. Daoheng sent other disciples again, but Those who left would never go back. Later, when Daoheng met those disciples who left him, he asked them, "I have spent a lot of effort to open your eyes. Why do you deviate from the master?" The disciples replied, "Our eyes are from the right, but because of the master, they have caused evil." Daoheng was even more resentful to Huike, and slandered and bribed the government to harm Huike. ...
Because of persecution in Yedu, Huike was displaced to Yewei (now Anyang , Jixian). Because he had no fixed place and his way was more mysterious, he did not have many followers. At that time, there was a lay Buddhist named Xiang who liked to live in secluded wood and fled in the forest and wilderness, and highly praised Huike's Zen method. In the early years of Tianbao Xiang Huike wrote a letter to Tonghao and said, "The shadow arises from the form, and the sound arises from the sound. Those who make shadows and tired shapes do not know that the form is the shadow; those who make sounds stop, do not know that sound is the root of the sound. Shadow arises from the form, and sound arises from the sound waves. Those who make shadows and tired shapes do not know that the form is the shadow; those who make sounds stop know that sound is the root of the sound. Those who think that if they can eliminate all troubles, they can seek Nirvana, it is like abandoning the form and seeking shadow; those who leave sentient beings and seeking to achieve Buddhahood are also like seeking sound in silence. Therefore, obsession and enlightenment are the same path, and there is no difference between stupidity and wisdom. If an originally name is added to a name, it forms a frame, and there will be different cognitive right and wrong; things that are originally unconventional are divided by secular principles, forming rigidity, and there will be debates on different principles. The world is invincible, how many right and wrong are there to be disputes? Things in the world are false and have no reality, so why bother to say that there is nothing? I know that what I have obtained is not really gain, and what I have lost is also real loss. So before going to visit and ask for advice, I will first tell you this meaning, hoping to get your answer. "When Huike read his letter, he replied, "The truths you said are all true truths and are not much different from the true Buddhism. If you are lost in nature, even the Mani wisdom pearl will become rubble; your heart suddenly becomes clear and self-conscious, it is the true pearl of the soul. Ignorance and wisdom are in a thought, and all things are not separated from the origin of the heart. Write down these, in order to enlighten the disciples who have discriminatory views in the world, you must know that there is no difference between the human body and the Buddha body, and there is really no need to seek it out." His words are very Zen, and some people compiled it into a book, as in a separate volume.
At that time, there were Hua Gong, Liao Gong, and Zen Master. They were all proficient in the mythology and had also communicated with Huike with books. Unfortunately, the age was long and the inscriptions were not easy to see, and there were no words left behind, which was really regrettable. There is also Master Lin who taught the "Shengfeng Jing" in Yedu and analyzed its meaning. Every time he explained, he selected those who were proficient in the three parts, totaling 700, and Huike was one of them. When Emperor Wu of Zhou destroyed the Buddha, he and Huike jointly protected the sutras and statues, and spared no effort to protect Buddhism.
At first, Zen Master Damo taught Huike in four volumes of the Lankavatara Sutra and said to him: "According to my observation, there is only this sutra in the Han area. A benevolent person will be able to save himself and others by practicing this." Huike focused on the mysterious principles, as mentioned above. He was chopped down his arms by a thief and used the law to control his heart, and did not feel pain. He burned the wound with fire, wrapped the broken place with cloth, and begged for food. Everything was the same, but others did not notice it. Later, Master Lin was also cut off his arm by a thief. He was in unbearable pain and wailed all night. Huike bandaged his wounds and went out to beg for food to support Master Lin. Master Lin blamed Huike for being unsuccessful and got angry. Huike said, "The cake is right in front of you, can't you eat it?" Master Lin said, "I don't have arms, don't you know?" Huike said, "I don't have arms, what's worth getting angry?" Master Lin asked, and respected Zen Master Huike even more, so he is called "armless forest" in the world. Every time Huike finished speaking, he said, "After this method has been passed through four generations, it will inevitably become a name and appearance. It's so sad!"
Another Zen master, whose surname is Ma, lived in Donghai at the age of 21, explaining the "Rites" and "Yi". There are more than 400 apprentices. Once, he went to the east of Xiangzhou (now south of Anyang City, Henan Province) and met Zen Master Huike, so he became a monk with ten scholars. The people of the disciples set up a vegetarian camp in the east of Xiangzhou to say goodbye, and the sound of farewell alarmed the capital. Since becoming a monk, Zen master did not hold a pen or common script in his hand, and practiced in his head, wearing a robes and a bowl in his hand. The places where he studied were not prosperous. There is also Zen Master Huiman... also belongs to this category. He specializes in one's clothing and food, but he only stores two needles. I sew my clothes myself in winter, and I abandon all my clothes in summer, leaving only a bunker underwear. ...These are all disciples of Huike, so they will not be described separately.
