Brom said that he was largely influenced by his study abroad in the United States in the early days of his photography career, when he studied with celebrity photographers Allan Sekula and Jonathan Green. Other notable influences on his early work include Frank Gohlke, William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz, Nicholas Nixon, John Gossage and Stephen Shore. While in Columbus, Ohio, he participated in the Ohio project. The book of the same name was published 25 years later.

What needs to stand out
Brom believes that today's photography majors face greater challenges in positioning themselves in a trivial photography world. Unlike in the past when photography was a single medium and professional course, cameras can now be found on smartphones. Although the opportunities and access to photography have increased infinitely, it takes a lot of imagination to stand out. Learning from outstanding programs like Ruhr and Ohio is also crucial.
"Ruhr"
His Ruhr project is still one of the most outstanding works, depicting the changes in the landscape caused by human activities. The project shows the changes in this region of Germany from its prosperous industrial age to reduced by pollution. The photos were taken in the 1970s and 1980s, respectively, while the book with the same title was published in 2007.
When outlining his work Ruhr, photographers believed that this was a reaction to the Americans, that photographic reactions can only achieve long-term reality through coherent recording of photography idioms. Brom’s work on the project is a form of face-to-face criticism. It is also seen as an important link in the development of landscape photography between the United States and Europe in the 1970s.
