metering is the process of calculating the appropriate exposure value . To put it simply, let the camera know whether it is daytime or night, whether it is sunny or cloudy.

exposure? When we take a photo, the amount of light entering the camera is exposure. But how much light is needed to enter? The camera decides what aperture, shutter, and sensitivity to determine the exposure value based on the detected light and dark conditions. Therefore, before exposure, exposure is the result given after metering. The bottom line of the view frame is the exposure value
. One thing to emphasize is that the camera starts metering after turning on the camera. It is not what some people say that it starts metering after pressing the shutter halfway. If you turn on the camera and move the camera, you will find that the exposure value below the view frame is constantly changing.

The metering mode is more effective when automatic exposure. Aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode, semi-automatic mode, etc. In the manual mode of M-speed, the metering system is invalid because all parameters are arranged by the photographer.
In automatic mode, the one I use most often is "aperture priority" mode A.
There are four metering modes for the camera: In fact, the difference between these modes is the difference in the camera's area of the metering range in the picture.
① Spot metering
The most accurate. It only meters about 2% of the locations in the picture. For example, if you only meter the light on one candle wick in the picture, the camera will set parameters based on this brightness. If the brightness value of this area is 7, the camera will determine the light and darkness of the photo based on the light value of 7, regardless of the surrounding brightness at all.

So when taking photos with very clear light and dark, use point metering and only metering the highlight position.

▶Sunset silhouette: But it should be noted that the characters occupy the size of the picture. If the characters are far away, choose "spot metering"; if it is a big head, select "local metering" mode (see local metering)

Local metering applicable scenarios: Backlight portrait (when the human area is relatively large)

③ Evaluation metering ( Nikon is called matrix metering )
This is the smartest way of metering. Matrix metering analyzes the entire picture and obtains the average value of the brightness and darkness of the picture. More than 90% of shooting in life are this metering method. It is also very suitable for beginners and basically no mistakes can be made.

▶The most suitable is: a large area with uniform light and scenery: grassland, mountain scenery, water scenery, and urban buildings.

, just like point metering, this mode is also single-point metering. Allocate the maximum proportion to the bright part. A small number of Nikon cameras have this metering mode. In this mode, the camera will focus on the bright part, and give priority to ensuring that the bright part of the subject is exposed correctly.
For example, actors in the stage spotlight, characters in direct light.

⚠️Note:
① Point metering and bright focus metering are two types of points that have a linkage effect with the focus point. When using single-point focus, the position of the metering is the position of the focus point. Wherever the focus moves, it will measure where it will.
② Backlight portraits must not use matrix metering, because the person's back is facing the sun, the light on his face is very weak and the light behind him is very strong. If you use matrix metering, the camera thinks that the whole picture is brighter, and the result of exposure is that the character will be photographed as a big black face.
③The sunset has many ways to take photos. The results you want to get are different, and the metering method you choose is different: The silhouette of a villain with a large view is metered with spot metering; the portrait of a backlight is metered with local metering; the atmosphere of the sunset and architectural details is metered with matrix metering.
