01. A baby with a lot of eye droppings ≠ getting angry
Almost every mother has encountered the situation where her child’s eyes are covered with eye droppings.
's first reaction was to quickly wipe the baby clean with a wet towel. His second reaction was that the baby might be angry and needed to calm it down!
The term "getting angry" seems to be used by both adults and children, as long as there is a little discomfort, such as the conjunctiva is a little red, there is a lot of eye mucus, and there is a bump around the mouth. It can be used for yellow urine, etc.
But what exactly is "getting angry"?
Most of the time, it is actually: a certain part of the body is infected by virus or bacteria , resulting in a series of "red, swollen, hot, and painful" symptoms.
To relieve this symptom, relying on reducing fire is of little use, because most of these methods of reducing fire cannot kill viruses or bacteria. Only by finding the cause of the symptoms can the problem be fundamentally solved.
For example, a child has a lot of eye droppings. If the child has a small amount of white or transparent eye droppings when he wakes up in the morning, most of them are normal and many people will have it.
But if there is a lot of eye mucus and it reappears after wiping, it is not that simple.
02. Don’t worry too much about these two situations of “excessive eye excrement” in babies.
Inverted eyelashes
Some babies have excessive eye excrement and like to rub their eyes. This is caused by inverted eyelashes.
This is actually very common, because the baby's face is short and fat, the bridge of the nose has not yet developed, and the eyelids have more fat. When the eyelid margin becomes thicker, it is easy for the eyelashes to roll back inward, causing trichiasis .
If the eyelashes irritate the eyeballs, the eyes will become watery or produce eye feces.
When the baby reaches about 1 year old, the eyelashes will naturally grow outward and the eye droppings will decrease accordingly. Even when the baby is about 3 years old, as the bridge of the baby's nose grows taller and the distance between the eyes becomes closer, the trichiasis will gradually alleviate, so parents don't have to worry.
If the baby does not improve after he is over 3 years old, you need to take the baby to the hospital for a check-up.
Nasolacrimal duct obstruction
Nasolacrimal duct obstruction, also known as Tear duct obstruction , is the most common cause of excessive eye feces in babies.
Tear duct obstruction in babies is caused by the fact that the tear system of the newborn baby is still developing, and the membrane covering the tear duct does not disappear on its own after birth.
Most babies can open their nasolacrimal ducts on their own when they are about 6 months old, and generally do not need special treatment.
And doctors will also teach parents to massage the baby's tear ducts:
After parents wash their hands, massage the inner corners of the baby's eyes on both sides of the nose bridge, and apply downward pressure with the index finger to promote the opening of the nasolacrimal duct.
Finally, wipe away tears and secretions with a moistened cotton swab.
Only when the baby's nasolacrimal duct obstruction cannot be relieved by massage, you need to take the baby to see a doctor and let a professional doctor help the baby.
03. Don't be careless about these two types of "excessive eye feces"
The first one is conjunctivitis
If we find that the baby's eyelids are swollen, the whites of the eyes or the inner corners of the eyes are red and edematous, there is an increase in eye feces, or even a feeling of pus inside, the baby may have conjunctivitis.
The baby will feel pain and itching, and we can also see tears and discharge from the baby's eyes. This is a normal response of the baby's body trying to eliminate inflammation.
Common pathogens that cause neonatal conjunctivitis include Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, etc.
Newborns are most likely to develop conjunctivitis when mothers give birth. During natural delivery, the baby will be exposed to bacteria or viruses in the birth canal. At this time, the baby's immunity is relatively low, and the tear glands are immature, so bacteria can easily invade the eyes, leading to neonatal conjunctivitis.
If parents find that their baby has conjunctivitis, they must take their baby to the hospital as soon as possible.
You need to wash your hands before giving eye drops to your baby and after cleaning up the eye droppings. Especially after coming into contact with the baby's eye droppings, do not touch your own eyes directly to prevent contact infection.
When instilling eye drops, you should also be careful not to poke the mouth of the bottle directly into your baby's eyes to avoid damaging the cornea.
The second one is: dacryocystitis
Neonatal dacryocystitis is a common eye disease in infants and young children. It is a complication of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Its incidence rate is about 6% of newborns.
If your baby has a lot of eye feces, red and swollen eyelids, sticky secretions, and watery eyes, and may also have symptoms of small raised skin bumps at the inner corners of the eyes, this may be dacryocystitis.
Parents, if your baby's condition does not improve, you must take your baby to the hospital as soon as possible.
04. Can I use breast milk to put eye drops?
There are folk remedies that say that dripping milk into the baby's eyes can cure conjunctivitis. This is something you should never try.
Even if there are some specific antibodies and to improve immunity nutrients in breast milk, the baby needs to drink it, digest and absorb it and then transform it.
So apart from breastfeeding, breast milk is really not as magical as imagined!
Not to mention that there is no scientific basis, but the various nutrients in milk will only become a breeding ground for pathogens and accelerate the reproduction of germs. Moreover, if the baby's eyeball mucosa cannot withstand the stimulation of high concentrations of protein , it may not only fail to heal, but will aggravate the baby's condition.
05. Can eye drops be used? How to use
If your baby has a lot of eye droppings, some parents will go to the drugstore to buy eye drops for their children. It is recommended not to use them casually.
If your child has dry eyes for a short period of time, preservative-free artificial tears can be dropped to relieve it, but if it is for other reasons, it is best to see a doctor first.
If the doctor prescribes eye drops for the baby, parents should pay attention to the following when using them:
1. Before giving eye drops to the baby, parents must wash their hands to prevent cross-infection, and be careful not to scratch the baby's eyes with their too long nails.
2. Before using, make sure this medicine is for your baby and determine the dosage. Do not give your baby eye drops that are half used by others, nor buy eye drops for your baby based on experience.
3. To prepare the baby, you can tell the baby why you need eye drops, or use toys to attract the baby's attention, wrap the baby's hands and feet, etc. to ensure that the baby is ready.
4. Clean the baby's eyes. Dirt, sweat or eye droppings around the eyes will affect the baby's medication. First wipe them clean with a wet cotton swab or cotton cloth.
5. No contact! Do not let the top of the eyedrop container come into contact with the baby's eyes, eyelids, eyelashes and other parts, and drop it in the air. Parents should not touch the mouth of the bottle with their hands to keep the liquid clean.
6. Only when it flows out does it need to be replenished. Others do not need more drops. A few more drops will not have any good effect.
7. The shelf life ≠ the usage period after opening. According to the doctor's advice, some may be thrown away after one day, and some may be thrown away after seven days. Follow the doctor's advice.
It is said that the eyes are windows, and it is no exception for everyone, especially babies who are full of curiosity and desire to explore the world.
Therefore, parents should not be superstitious about "home remedies" and give them to their babies to try without permission. You should also pay attention to the cleanliness of your baby's eyes and pay more attention to your baby's eyes. If your baby's eyes become swollen, red, or have a lot of sticky secretions, you must see a doctor in time.
