Absent-mindedness, rolling around, making noise, resisting, and hurting others. Many mothers want to provide family intervention for their children after learning about some teaching methods, but they will more or less encounter such problems when teaching their children. Most of the above problems make parents helpless, and finally have to rely on professional therapists. However, the time children spend with therapists is far less than the time they spend with parents. Long-term and high-intensity training is crucial to children's recovery, so family intervention is very important. Correctly handling children's problem behaviors can make parents more comfortable in training their children. Let's learn how to correctly handle children's problem behaviors.
Put this point at the top. Simple and rough beatings and scoldings are absolutely not advisable. Although it may have an "immediate" effect in the early stage, it will also bring serious adverse consequences in the long run. I believe everyone has heard this saying: "If beating and scolding worked, then all the Chinese would go to Tsinghua and Peking University." Therefore, if we want our children to fundamentally solve the problem, we must abandon beating and scolding and actively guide them.
Speaking of problem behaviors, what can you think of? There are many problem behaviors, ranging from inattention to hitting others. Here I will introduce the four most common ones: laziness, losing temper, hurting others or self-harm, and dangerous behaviors.
Correct handling of children's laziness: First of all, we must understand that when we set clear, rich, and interesting tasks for children, and the children are in a busy and planned training state, laziness will naturally decrease. Children's attention cannot be concentrated for a long time. When we provide children with tasks that are difficult, mechanically repetitive, and frightening, the children's attention and interest will be greatly reduced. The children will not be able to express themselves verbally, and will be replaced by laziness and inaction. So when children are lazy, we need to rationally analyze the reasons. Is the game too difficult or too noisy? Is the game too boring? Appropriately reducing the difficulty, making the game more diverse, and attracting more children's attention can effectively get children to re-engage in the game and participate in learning. In addition, what I have always said to parents is that children should not be too demanding. A class in school is only forty minutes, so we do not need to require children to be online for half an hour. Give instructions when the child makes eye contact with you, and give rewards after completion. It is not like rushing to the progress of a project. I just give instructions whether the child looks at it or not. In this way, the child learns nothing, and the parents are still very tired. Grasp the progress correctly. Family intervention does not require speed, but precision.
Correctly handle children's tantrums: Tantrums are the main reason why most parents give up on family intervention. Normal children also lose their temper. Compared with their normal peers, the tantrums of autistic children are more complex, last longer, and are more difficult to calm down. Children with autism have weak expressive abilities and cannot express their demands correctly. When their normal or abnormal needs are not met, they often achieve their goals by making noises, rolling on the ground, etc. Parents often cannot bear it, so they will fulfill the child's demands, such as buying him toys, letting him watch cartoons for an extra hour, etc. The child will find that the "tantrum" method is very effective, and will lose his temper next time when he is not satisfied. If this is repeated, the child's tantrums will become more and more serious. When a child loses his temper, we need to correctly analyze the reasons for his tantrum and see whether the child's needs are normal or abnormal. For normal needs, we must meet them. For abnormal needs, we must stand firm. No matter what the child does, we cannot let him achieve his goal. For example, when a child is thirsty or hungry, we must eat and drink water on time; when a child is afraid of the dark or animals, we must understand the child and protect the child at the same time; but when the child wants to eat more snacks, take other people's toys, etc., we must keep in mind the six no's: "no comfort, no nagging, no satisfaction, no scolding, no beating, no ignoring."
Correctly deal with children who hurt others or self-harm: Some children will have serious destructive and aggressive behaviors, such as hitting others with sticks, pinching themselves, etc. When this type of behavior occurs, we parents cannot stand by and watch. When a child's behavior affects others, our cold treatment will aggravate this type of behavior. The child will regard hitting others as a way to vent, which will have a serious impact on other people's lives. When a child hurts someone for the first time, we must immediately give a clear and stern warning. If the child can control his emotions in time, we must reward him; if the child still cannot control himself, we must immediately stop this behavior and give corresponding punishment. The most commonly used punishment is the "temporary isolation method". When a child exhibits aggressive and destructive behavior, we must first clearly point out the reason for punishing the child. For example: "You just hit Xiao Ming. Go to the corner and stand for one minute (usually a few minutes for your age)." After saying this, immediately take the child to the corner for punishment. If the child does not cooperate, enforce it and then turn on the timer. (a countdown on a mobile phone is also acceptable), set it for one minute, and tell the child to wait until the timer rings before leaving. After starting the timer, ignore any of the child's requests and do not answer any of the child's questions. When the timer sounds, end the isolation, and do not reason with the child at the same time. When aggressive and destructive behavior occurs again within a short period of time, one minute will be added for each occurrence.
Correctly handle children's dangerous behaviors: In addition to the above behaviors, some children will also engage in behaviors that may cause serious harm to themselves, such as climbing through windows and pressing sockets with their hands. Although this type of behavior has no impact on others, it may cause serious harm to one's own life and safety. We must also deal with it in a timely manner. Commonly used methods include "natural consequences punishment method" and "observation method". The natural consequences punishment method uses the consequences of things that occur naturally to achieve the purpose of punishment. For example, children like to grab the heat of boiling water with their hands, and like to hit the corner of the table with their heads. In order to prevent the child from being injured, we can only stay with the child inseparable, but we cannot guarantee that we will always be next to the child. The child will still grab the water vapor out of curiosity when he sees it. In this case, we might as well let the children catch the water vapor and hit the corner of the table. When children experience the consequences of this behavior themselves, they will reduce the frequency of this type of behavior. It should be noted that this method is only suitable for behaviors that cause minor harm to children. Behaviors that cause serious harm to children, such as pressing sockets with hands, jumping off buildings, etc., require observation. For example, if a child likes to jump from a high place, we can use the child's favorite glass toy, throw it down from a high place, and then take the child to watch the consequences of the toy falling from a high place. At the same time, we can also use the cartoon that the child likes to watch to educate the child so that the child can empathize with it. If they know the consequences of this type of behavior, they will reduce these behaviors.
