Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun: ARM is very similar to us, PCs and game consoles are not competitors

Tencent Technology News November 22, the chip giant Nvidia ended another gratifying quarter. The company previously released its third-quarter financial report as of October 25, showing revenue reached 4.73 billion US dollars, an increase of 57% year-on-year, achieving the strongest growth in two and a half years. At the same time, net profit reached US$1.336 billion, a year-on-year increase of 49%. A few days after the release of the financial report, Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun accepted an exclusive interview to discuss the above financial performance, as well as other issues, such as the current antitrust environment. Tech giants such as Apple, Google, Amazon) and Facebook have recently faced more antitrust scrutiny, whether this will affect Nvidia, especially in the case of its attempt to spend $40 billion to acquire British chip design company Arm. Nvidia also said that the company’s cloud gaming service GeForce Now will now make its debut on iOS in the form of a web application, and the popular game "Fortnite" will be launched soon. Previously, due to Apple's restrictions on cloud gaming services, GeForce Now and similar services could not be logged on the Apple platform. In an interview with

, Huang Renxun was also asked whether the acquisition of Arm would make Nvidia more open than other transactions. At the same time, he also talked about the comparison between personal computers (PCs) and next-generation game consoles, and how Nvidia’s two major businesses compete with each other, namely game graphics and artificial intelligence/data center chips, and how they become the company’s largest source of revenue.

Q: First of all, congratulations on your gratifying performance in the third fiscal quarter. In terms of antitrust, I want to know that US regulators and Congress are now reviewing technology giants. Will this affect Nvidia to some extent, especially in the case of your acquisition of Arm? What is your opinion on the current antitrust environment?

Huang Renxun: Nvidia will not be troubled by antitrust investigations, and competition in all the industries we engage in is extremely fierce. Arm has a large customer base, new markets they want to enter, but they have suffered severe setbacks. We have every reason to believe that by revenue from Arm, we will increase customer choice and increase market innovation. Our assessment shows that the regulator will approve the transaction soon.

asks: Do you think the acquisition of Arm will help Nvidia become more open than ever?

Huang Renxun: Arm and Nvidia are very similar. NVIDIA’s architecture is suitable for every cloud, every computer manufacturer, and devices of all shapes and sizes. You can choose to buy chips, systems, or lease at a price of $1 per hour. Our platform is widely adopted because it is open. People even talk about reverse engineering our architecture, which is good. This architecture may be the richest architecture available for general programming in the world except for x86. Arm is the same, their architecture can be used by anyone. This is very similar to us, and we have a very similar attitude towards the usability of our architecture to customers.

asks: On the other hand, do you want other companies to become more open and allow you to do more? For example, Apple and GeForce Now. Cloud gaming applications can only be truly implemented on the Internet. How do you feel about keeping others open?

Huang Renxun: Our strategy is to remain open and become an open platform where everyone can use it as they wish. But everyone has their own strategy, and our strategy happens to be an open platform strategy.

Q: Now it’s the season of centralized release of game consoles. How do you compare today's PCs with game consoles? An interesting competition is brewing.

Huang Renxun: I don't think PCs and game consoles are really competitors. What you can do on a PC, sometimes cannot be done on a game console. But the best part is that all content developers must raise the bar as game consoles become more powerful. Everyone is turning to ray tracing, which is awesome. All of these are good for the game.

If you look at the way people use computers now, you will know that games are far beyond the scope of games themselves. It is used in art, sports, to share and influenceOthers, and the PC is the best platform for all of this. Not to mention, you still need a PC for video conferencing and other things. You might as well buy Nvidia's GeForce, which has artificial intelligence broadcasting capabilities, and many other things. It's really worth the money!

Q: I find that the share of gaming and data center business in your revenue is constantly changing. Do you think this situation will continue to happen in the foreseeable future?

Huang Renxun: I hope these two businesses can continue to maintain their leading positions in business scale. One day, everyone in the world will become a game player. This is a foregone conclusion. There are only 1 billion active gamers today, but it may increase to 7 billion or 8 billion in the future. The growth opportunities of games are still far ahead, and games are the only form of entertainment that can be any entertainment. You and I all know that when the virtual world comes, we will spend more time in the game world, not just for games, but for hanging out, getting along with people, and interacting with people. The game market has a bright future.

in Seattle, Washington. On the other hand, I also know that artificial intelligence is a new way of writing software, and this way of writing software will affect every industry. Because we can now write software that could not be written before, computing can cover more areas that were previously impossible. For example, who would have thought that on the road of the future, one billion computers would drive around in a car? Who would have thought that in the future, there will be thousands of computers roaming in warehouses and factories? These are new applications, and these applications would not be possible without artificial intelligence.

Each building will be an independent artificial intelligence, and everything will be artificial intelligence. This will generate a lot of data and more calculations. Thanks to the support of artificial intelligence, the computer industry will become huge. What is missing now is the catalyst, and writing software is the last piece of the puzzle. If someone can write software, we can sell a computer. Now we can use computers to write software. These two businesses are long-term opportunities. (Tencent Technology Review/Golden Deer)
