113 generation Core processor introduction

At the IntelOn Technology Innovation Summit last month, Intel officially launched the long-awaited "13 fragrance" - RaptorLake, the 13th generation Core desktop-level processor. It continues the many advantages of AlderLake 12-generation Core processor, such as Intel7, high-performance hybrid architecture, DDR5, PCIeGen5.0 and other state-of-the-art technologies; while the RaptorLake 13-generation Core processor has higher frequency, more core counts, and its cache capacity is larger. In general, it has a new peak in performance.

Another compelling thing is that the 13th generation Core processor also uses the LGA1700 interface, which is compatible with the latest Z790 motherboard. It can also be compatible with backwards compatible with Z690/B660 motherboards. This is equivalent to seamlessly upgrading the 13th generation processor, which is a lot of improvement in playability and performance. So is it really as Intel said that "the 13th generation is really fragrant", and how fragrant it is?

Before entering the test, let’s learn which models of RaptorLake 13-generation Core desktop-level processors will meet us. Like the 12th-generation Core at that time, the first 13th-generation Core processors launched were all six processors with K processors: i9-13900K/KF, i7-13700K/KF and i5-13600K/KF.

The comparison table for this processor starts with the 10th generation Core processor. i5~i9 with series processors, which seem to have many models and are very complicated, but if you look at the keywords: "Core quantity, frequency, cache, memory frequency ", everything will be clear.

First of all, the 13th generation Core i9-13900K processor is also the fastest desktop-level processor in the world. It replaced the previous 12th generation Core i9-12900K processor, and the single-threaded performance improvement reached 15%, while the multi-threaded capability has reached a performance improvement of 41%. This specification and performance improvement seems to be really good to suppress competitors.

i9-13900K is equipped with 8 performance cores and 16-core energy efficiency cores, which adds 8 more energy efficiency cores compared to the previous generation i9-12900K. At the same time, the maximum turbo frequency reaches 5.8GHz, the second-level cache increases to 32MB, and the total L3 cache also reaches 36MB, and even supports higher memory frequency of DDR5-5600, but the maximum acceleration power consumption is only 253W (stays at the same level as the 12th generation).

and i7-13700K can be regarded as the i9-12900KPLUS version. The core number is the same as i9-12900K, both of which are 8 performance cores and 8-core energy-efficiency cores, but the maximum turbo frequency reaches 5.4GHz, and the second-level cache reaches 24MB, and the total L3 cache also reaches 30MB. The overall specification is much stronger than i9-12900K. It is really good to buy i9-level performance at the 3K level.

As for i5-13600K, it also has a large specification improvement, with performance cores remaining at 6, while energy efficiency cores reaching 8. In this way, the number of threads has reached 20, which is unprecedented in i5-level processors. Furthermore, the core frequency and cache capacity are both higher than the previous generation 5-12600K, and even higher than the i7-12700K. The high specifications and moderate pricing are the ones who are looking forward to this processor.

-i5-13600KF: 2499 yuan

-i5-13600K: 2699 yuan

-i7-13700KF: 3299 yuan

-i7-13700K: 3499 yuan

-i9-13900KF: 4699 yuan

-i9-13900K: 4899 yuan

again, several processors have been sold on major e-commerce platforms. Compared with the retail pricing of 12th generation processors, the quotation of 13th generation i9 processors is basically on the same level, while the 13th generation i7 and i5 have slightly increased by two or three hundred, but the core specifications are improved, and it is still the same sentence, which is a bit fragrant.

architecture changes

high-performance hybrid architecture has made its debut on AlderLake 12-generation Core processors. RaptorLake 13-generation processors will also adopt this revolutionary high-performance hybrid architecture, even in the future MeteorLake and ArrowLake will also appear.

At the media communication meeting, in fact, before talking about architecture, Intel official personnel have always emphasized that the Intel7 process technology has taken a step further, and the latest third-generation Intel SuperFin transistor has a higher chip density, so more energy efficiency cores are stuck.

Secondly, lntel has been improved in the performance core, using a faster RaptorCove core, and under the same voltage, it has an increase in frequency of +600MHz, so the flagship i9-13900K maximum turbo frequency frequency reaches 5.8GHz.

Official information of the 12th-generation Core processor

As you can see, the 13th-generation Core processor has been adjusted in both L2 and L3 caches, and the L2 cache for each performance core has been increased to 2MB (1.2MB for the 12th-generation Core), and the L2 cache for each cluster of energy efficiency core has been increased to 4MB. At the same time, it is equipped with a new dynamic prefetcher algorithm "L2P", and the RaptorCove core has become the fastest performance core in Intel.

In addition, the L3LLC cache is directly increased to a maximum of 36MB. Basically, the L2L3 cache of each grade of the 13th generation Core processor is much higher than that of the 12th generation Core processor. It also supports higher frequency DDR5 memory. The author can tell you that DDR5-5600 is just the beginning. In the end, we directly drove the memory to DDR5-7000.

According to the official data of lntel, the most obvious improvement in single-thread performance in the 13th generation Core processor is the performance increase in the frequency band, basically in the cache; the most obvious improvement in multi-thread performance is the performance increase brought by the energy efficiency core, followed by frequency and cache, and the last is the improvement in memory frequency, about 2~3%.

But even if the performance is improved so much, the 13th-generation Core brings about 37% multi-threading performance improvements under the same power consumption, not to mention that the 13th-generation Core can release higher 253W power consumption, so the performance improvement is more obvious, reaching 41%.

Of course, there are still many other small upgrades to the 13th generation Core processor. For example, the hardware thread scheduler is upgraded to the 2nd generation, which can update thread-level boundaries through machine learning technology. And DynamicTuningTechnology's full-core dormant technology, but this is limited to mobile platforms. With the latest Windows 1122H2 of micro software, there seems to be special optimization settings in the 13th generation Core, and lntel emphasizes that we need to use the Windows 1122H2 system when testing.

2 test platform performance test

evaluation platform

Since the test object is a flagship processor, our accessories use the most advanced systems and accessories as auxiliary tests, and graphics cards, power supplies and heat dissipation are all top-notch products, which can meet the performance of the processor in all aspects.

This time we got the special media version of Intel's official test. The packaging includes two processors, i9-13900K and i5-13600K. Unfortunately, the i7-13700K is gone, otherwise our test will be more comprehensive.

. The people participating in the evaluation also included three processors of the 12th generation Core, such as i9-12900K, i7-12700K and i5-12600K. They originally planned to borrow the competitor R9-7950X, but their peers also had to use it, so they could only give up on comparative testing. After all, non-Su Ma's core media does not have U. We use two parts for the

motherboard, one is the DDR5 motherboard (ROGMAXIMUSZ790HERO), and the other is (MSIMPGZ790EDGEWIFID4), which is used to test the performance of the same 13th generation Core processors under different types and memory frequencies. Of course, since the brand and model are different, there will be certain differences in BIOS adjustment and performance optimization, so please refer to it.

In fact, the biggest improvement of Intel Z790 motherboard is that it has more PCIe4.0 channels and USB3.2Gen2x2 interfaces, so basically the mainstream level and above Z790 motherboards will be equipped with all 5 PCIe4.0M.2 solid-state drive interfaces, as well as more USB3.2Gen2x2 interfaces, which have stronger expansion performance. In the

DDR5 platform, we used four Kingston Fury Renegade RGBDDR5-6000MHzC3216GB memory to form a dual-channel 64GB large-capacity test platform. Of course, this memory actually has a higher specification DDR5-6400MHzC32. In order to pursue more stable testing, we only used XMPII file.

and DDR4, we also use four high-frequency GSKILLTridentZRoyalRGBDDR4-4000MHzC1516G memory to form a 32GB capacity test platform. However, the DDR4-4000Gear1 is still a bit difficult for several processors we tested this model, so it is manually controlled to test under the DDR4-3600MHzC15 specification.

Theoretical Performance Test

Let's first look at the theoretical performance test of DMARK. With i5-12600K as the 100% baseline, you can see that the theoretical performance of i9-13900K is quite terrifying: from the CPUProfile sub-item test, the single-core performance has been improved by about 11.8%, and the processor running frequency has reached 5.8GHz; from the second thread, the processor performance beam has been stable at the multi-core 5.5GHz level, so the multi-threading capability has been improved by about 24.5%. According to the entire 3DMARK theoretical performance test, the i9-13900K has increased by about 23% compared with the previous generation i9-12900K, and this theoretical performance improvement is already quite impressive.

and i5-13600K did not disappoint everyone. The performance of the previous generation i5-12600K was significantly ahead of the theoretical performance of 14.51%; and such performance has exceeded i7-12700K, no wonder i5-13600K is the 13th generation Core processor that is most booked on the e-commerce platform.

Let’s look at some of the single-core and multi-core performance performances in CPU-Z, 7-ZIP and Cinebench that we often use. The 13th-generation Core processor is really amazing. Even the author was surprised after the test, so there was no problem in testing the verification data for a few more rounds. The performance improvement brought by the increase in the frequency improvement of the 13th-generation Core and the increase in energy efficiency core are really amazing.

In fact, we have also seen that we have added the performance comparison between the D5 platform and the D4 platform in this test. From the theoretical performance just now, there is a certain theoretical performance gap between the D5 high-frequency platform and the practical D4 platform. In AIDA64, you can take a closer look at the difference between the memory reading and writing capabilities under the two platforms. In terms of

memory writing, the 12th generation Core has actually played a good leading role, and the 13th generation Core continues to perform its high-performance read and write performance. Let’s focus on the read and write performance of L2 and L3. After the 13th generation Core has improved the cache capacity, the read and write performance of L2 and L3 is really obvious. Both processors of the same level have achieved a performance improvement of 25% and 16%.

Of course, since the D4 we tested here uses four models, it will increase capacity at a certain frequency. If everyone uses higher-spec DDR4 memory, it will have relatively good memory read and write performance. We will do some special tests to illustrate this point later.

game performance test

In terms of games, we only selected some games with BENCHMARK test program for performance testing. In order to avoid the processor's efforts but not the effort, the graphics card uses the top-level RTX4090FE, and the game resolution is only 1080p, and the DLSS mode will be mainly quality.

You can see that the game performance of i9-13900K is also relatively excellent with its higher main frequency frequency, which is about 13% higher than the i9-12900K; and the gaming performance of i5-13600K is even higher than the previous generation of i9-12900K, which is really beyond the author's imagination, so Heihei ordered an i5-13600K.

content creative ability performance test

content creative ability is something that everyone attaches more importance to in recent years, including processors, graphics cards, memory, and storage, which will directly affect the content creative ability performance of the entire machine. Here we have subdivided the theoretical performance of content creation ability and the performance test of content creation ability. One is the performance performance of the whole machine based on theoretical aspects, and the other is the actual performance test conducted using scripts or test programs. The theoretical tests of

include CrossMark, PCMARK10, and ULProcyon tests that Intel has always recommended. For CrossMark, the data tested by us for the professional version of BPN that we applied for is more accurate than the free version. Like our previous performance in theoretical performance testing, the performance of the i9-13900K processor is still the best. Under the same platform, it can bring a 17% performance improvement, while compared with the i9-12900K, it is about 11%.

Of course, the performance improvement of i5-13600K is also worthy of praise. It has been improved by about 22% compared with the previous product in actual performance tests. It is really amazing that the same price can bring so many performance improvements. It is really good to kill all the i7-12700K, which makes the i7-12700K users feel a little bit unbearable.

In the actual creative ability test at the same time, the results we tested using the latest PS, PR, and Da Vinci software were really powerful. Think about it, the improvement was not ideal when the 12th-generation Core was first launched, but the improvement was not a little bit higher with the 13th-generation Core.

Finally, let’s test the long-term SPECworkstation. This program is a testing tool for productivity workstation computers. It is actually not suitable for desktop-level comparisons. After all, we may not necessarily use most applications, but it can be used as a purchasing reference for everyone. As for scores, here is the SPEC multiplier. It was originally intended to be expressed in scores, but since the score units are not very uniform among multiple items, I will use the SPEC multiplier for your reference.

Unfortunately, there are no more reference objects, so it is difficult for the author to express how strong the i9-13900K is in the SPECworkstation test. Compared with the 12th-generation Core, the overall performance of the 13th-generation Core in SPECworkstation has also been significantly improved. I believe that after seeing this, you all know that the performance improvement of the 13th-generation Core this time is relatively large. Combined with the retail quotation, this cost-effectiveness is really good.

3 overclock test

overclock test

overclock test, as the 13th generation Core has increased support for high-frequency memory, you can see that when the author tested, he had already used four Kingston FURY Renegade DDR5RGB memory. So here we use this high-standard memory to overclock .

First, I simply read the memory directly into XMP , and directly increase the memory frequency to DDR5-6400C32. The same four stubs passed all the tests stably, and the memory readability reached 95960MB/s, the writeability reached 92961MB/s, and the copying also reached 94762MB/s. It can be said that it is the more ideal performance frequency we have tested at present.

Based on XMP, we then pulled the frequency to DDR5-6600, but it was obvious that four were not reliable. We could only use two KingstonFURY rebels (Renegade) to run all tests stably. We also tried DDR5-6800 and DDR5-7000 before, but the performance improvement was not very obvious.

As for processor overclocking, the i9-13900K itself is in a high frequency state, and the room for improvement is quite limited. Using XTU one-click overclocking is only a multiplication of the energy efficiency core by +1 operation, which is unnecessary. So we use the AI overclocking of the motherboard BIOS to achieve higher frequencies. We can see that the maximum frequency of a single core can reach 6.2GHz, the other cores are 2*6GHz, 2*5.9GHz, and 3*5.7Ghz, respectively. The CPU-Z single core score is 949.4 and the multi-core score is 16540.9. Compared with the default frequency, it is actually only a few points to improve the performance of a single core. The performance response of multi-core is limited by the heat dissipation problem and shows frequency reduction. So we actually recommend that you only overclock the processor if you have the conditions.

4 Power Consumption Summary

Temperature and power consumption

In fact, there is a common problem with high-frequency processors, that is, heat. Using AIDA64FPU for grilling, the package temperature of the i9-13900K processor directly reached 99 degrees. At this time, the performance core frequency of the processor is 5.2GHz, the energy efficiency core frequency is 4.2GHz, and the closed power of CPU is 265W.

Before the release, ROG updated the latest version of BIOS, which supports the processor to be limited to 90 degrees. Indeed, the temperature of the processor directly dropped to 91 degrees. At this time, the performance core frequency is 5.0GHz, which can reduce the core frequency to 4.1GHz. Of course, the corresponding performance of the temperature drop frequency decreases according to the corresponding performance. At this time, it is indeed more suitable for some users with limited heat dissipation conditions, such as ITX users or air-cooled users, to sacrifice certain performance to achieve lower temperature performance.

and i5-13600K, under the same conditions, the processor package temperature is 79 degrees, the performance core frequency is 5.1GHz, the energy efficiency core frequency is 3.9GHz, and the processor package power consumption is 150W. Here, the author uses the Dragon God IIAIO360 water-cooled radiator. The temperature performance is still OK, but it is recommended to use AIO240 water-cooled or advanced air-cooled radiator as the basis so that the processor performance will be achieved.

Summary:

At that time, the author used the main gun and secondary gun of the battleship to describe the relationship between performance cores and energy-efficient cores in high-performance hybrid architectures. So what would happen to the 13th generation Core processor? It is a battleship with higher loading, cannons, , and more secondary cannons. It seems that no one can do it, but Intel did.

First look at the 13th generation Core processor only thinks it is a higher core frequency, more energy efficiency cores, and larger cache capacity. But in fact, through careful testing, you will find that the improvement of the 13th generation Core processor is not only that simple, but the improvement of its specifications will indeed bring more performance, but the role of the thread height device is gradually deepening. How to optimize more cores has better performance in many programs and games. At present, lntel is doing quite well.

Of course, don’t forget that the content creation capabilities of the 13th generation Core processor have soared a lot after adding more energy efficiency cores. Here, the author recommends that you consider the 13th generation Core above i5-13600K level when purchasing the platform to build a content creation platform.

If you say that the 13th generation is not fragrant, then compared with the performance and pricing of the 12th generation Core and competitors, the author can tell you directly that it is really fragrant. Of course, such a good processor, such as i9-13900K, is recommended to be equipped with equally powerful motherboards, memory, and accessories such as graphics card to truly release its excellent performance.

and i5-13600K, if there is no need for more storage, then the author recommends using the old Z690D4 motherboard or B660D4 motherboard to form a cost-effective platform. If you are not sure, you can go to the Performance Chapter to see the performance performance of i5-13600K with DDR4 memory. There is a certain performance loss, but the cost-effectiveness is really high, so what is this performance?
