Google Starline project is an immersive video chat experimental system designed to narrow the distance between people without the need for AR or VR headsets. At Google's annual Cloud Next conference, the company announced it would roll out the system to selected enterprise partners.

A Google blog post said that the Starline project will start early this year and the prototype will be installed in the offices of Salesforce, WeWork, T-Mobile and Hackensack Meridian Health. With its sensors, light field display, spatial audio, computer vision and novel compression functions, the

Starline system provides a headless 3D chat experience and makes the network experience possible. The ultimate effect is that users can have face-to-face conversations with others, including eye contact.

The Starline prototype has been used in Google offices across the United States since the end of 2021, and the company says it can improve employee presence, attention and productivity compared to traditional video calling solutions. Since then, Google noted that it has demonstrated the technology to 100 corporate partners in the fields of media, healthcare and retail. "When we build a future of hybrid work with our corporate partners, we look forward to seeing the Starline program help employees build strong collaboration with each other, doctors and patients build a good doctor-patient relationship, and sales staff create deeper connections with customers; whether you are doing presentations or sitting down to chat with coffee, we want the Starline experience to be natural, as if the other person is in the same room with you, and more broadly, we are eager for employees to be energetic and productive at all times when working remotely."

Google revealed that the company will share more information about the Starline Early Access Program sometime next year.
