Meta officially launched support for NFTs on Facebook a week after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would soon test support for NFTs on Facebook. At the time, Zuckerberg said the test would allow creators to cross-post on Instagram and Facebook. Meta, shared a screenshot of digital collectibles support. According to the screenshot, users can post NFTs on their timeline, and clicking on them will reveal details about the digital collectible, such as the collection’s details and creator.
NFTs minted on Instagram, Ethereum and Polygon are supported at launch, with support for Solana and Flow on the way. Meta didn’t say whether the same blockchain is supported on Facebook, but that’s likely the case.
Zuckerberg also said Meta will be working on augmented reality NFTs (or 3D NFTs), which you can bring to Instagram Stories using Spark AR, the company's software AR platform. Last week, Meta expanded its NFT testing on Instagram, allowing more creators around the world to display their NFTs on Instagram. Prior to the expansion, the support was only available to select creators in the United States.
Meta says there will be no fees associated with publishing or sharing digital collectibles. The company also said it won't be offering the ability to turn digital collectible posts into ads just yet.
Meta said it is aware that NFTs raise important sustainability issues and as part of its sustainability commitment it is helping to reduce the impact of emissions that may be associated with digital collectibles by purchasing renewable energy .
