Let’s see if Mr. Yangming can pay for this piece of land. Mr. Yangming said: "This land was sold by you when you are in trouble. You will sell it at a low price. How can I take advantage of others' danger and take advantage of you?" He did not agree to the old farmer's request. After giving the old farmer some silver, he asked the old farmer to go back.
After a while, Wang Yangming led the students to study in the suburbs. Passing by a farmland, I saw the beautiful scenery and pleasant scenery here, and said with emotion: "It would be great if I could live here!" One of his students said: "This land was the land that the old farmer wanted to sell to you some time ago." Wang Yangming said regretfully: "It would be great to buy it at that time." As soon as he finished speaking, Mr. Yangming immediately felt something was wrong. Then he kept silent. Until the sunset and dusk, the study tour in the countryside ended. Mr. Yangming then slowly breathed and said, "I finally lost my selfish desires." At this time, the student beside him asked, "Teacher, why have you been silent from morning to dusk?" Mr. Yangming said slowly, "I regretted not buying that piece of land at first. This is the idea of selfish desire. When this idea of selfish desire comes, I will immediately restrain it. I don't speak, but I finally restrain my own selfish desires after spending a whole day."
Use Yangming's four sentences to analyze this story: Wang Yangming and his disciples are playing in the mountains, and their minds are so open and there is no good or evil. This is the "body without good or evil." But when the disciple told him that the land was once the piece that the old farmer wanted to sell to him, Wang Yangming immediately felt regretful: This is "good and malice." After thinking about it, Wang Yangming felt that his conscience was wrong. This was selfish desire and evil. Therefore, knowing good and evil is conscience. After that, he immediately remained silent and began to eliminate this kind of "evil" judged by his conscience, so this is "to do good and eliminate evil is to investigate things."
