During the Qing Dynasty, this place was still a desolate and sparsely populated place. There were stretches of muddy land in the east and west, covered with reeds and water plants, and there were also barren hills above the water. The people at that time called it Caodang, a bit like the reed marsh in Shajiabang. According to current parlance, it is called wetland.
In the old days, Qiantang River often collapsed. The victims of Dongsha and Nansha, as well as the adjacent Shaoxing, fled one after another with their children in tow, and stopped when they saw the grass swamps here. Pick a high ground, build a shed and live there. These people are particularly hard-working and hard-working, using iron rakes and shovels to cultivate land, plant food, and harvest miscellaneous grains to make ends meet. As the days passed, the cultivated land continued to expand, and life gradually got on track. Simple grass and wood shacks form a street, named New Street . Unexpectedly, a few days later, the man came with his children to express his gratitude, saying that Mrs. Zhao was also very skilled in medicine, and her illness was cured by the medicine, and her stomach problem was cured after two days of diarrhea. It turns out that the little boy swallowed Centipede by mistake, took arsenic, killed Centipede, pulled it out of his stomach, and recovered. After the man left, Mr. Zhao found out after questioning that she had done such an outrageous thing. He was so angry that he scolded his wife bloody. A couplet was also posted in front of the hall: "If there is an unvirtuous wife at home, arsenic will be used as medicine; take advantage of my ten years of luck and come to the doctor if you are sick." Not only did this incident not affect his reputation, people praised him not only for his medical skills but also for his medical ethics.
The prefect of Shaoxing also knew this legend and knew that Zhao Shiyan had excellent medical skills and noble medical ethics. He was specially ordered to go to Xinjie and other places to treat patients.It happened that the night boat sailed from Xixing last night and arrived in Shaoxing in the early morning. Zhao Shiyan set off immediately. The prefect sent several government servants to wait on the bank of Xiaoshao Canal. They arrived in Xiaoshan at noon and arrived at Xinjie without stopping. At this time, there were more and more patients. He went door to door for diagnosis and treatment. It turned out that he had cholera . If this disease is not treated urgently, it will become a plague once it spreads, with very serious consequences. Regardless of fatigue, he climbed to the mountain to collect medicinal herbs. After washing, a large pot was set up to boil medicinal soup, and the patient was asked to drink it quickly. After two or three days, after seeing that the patient's health improved and no death occurred, he took a night boat home.
In order to prevent the occurrence of cholera and malaria, he came to Xiaoshan New Street and other places again and again to impart knowledge and train apprentices. He brought out several apprentices named Zhu at the end of the mountain, and also led them to Changshan and Hu Shan, Beiganshan learned about Chinese herbal medicine, collected them, and taught them how to boil the medicine and make the ointment, how to control the heat and time, until their old age.
During an evening medical visit, Zhao Shiyan unfortunately fell into the East Zhejiang Canal and was killed. People were shocked and saddened by the bad news, and attended his funeral one after another. The prefect of Shaoxing personally presided over the funeral, and all the people in Xinjie who had been treated by him rushed to see him off. The last leg. On the way back, everyone talked about how to remember this great life-saver from generation to generation. Some people say that whether he is an upright official or a righteous man, in order to commemorate him, most of his descendants built temples and conferred him the title of Bodhisattva. This proposal was immediately supported by everyone. When I got home, I started donating money. Those enlightened country gentlemen contributed money one after another, and the required funds were quickly raised. He chose a piece of land at the foot of the mountain, and the carpenters and masons worked willingly and voluntarily, built a temple and erected a golden Buddha statue for him. The temple is named Tianyi Hall, and on the side stands the famous doctor Hua Tuo of the Han Dynasty, which means the reincarnation of Hua Tuo. Zhao Shiyan was named the Heavenly Doctor Bodhisattva.
Since then, the temple has been popular and famous. Zhao Tianyi has become more and more a legendary figure among the people. It is said that when people get sick, as long as they light incense and candles in front of them, kowtow and kneel down, ask the presiding monk for a small packet of Chinese herbal medicine, and swallow it with warm water, the pain will disappear quickly. With the development of science and the improvement of medical conditions, there is a health center in Xinjie. People always remember traditional Chinese medicine when seeing Western medicine. Therefore, there are several traditional Chinese medicine doctors in this health center, which may be related to Zhao Tianyi. Local people and surrounding towns and villages have never diminished their worship of this "Heavenly Medicine Bodhisattva", and people's kindness in commemorating him has never ceased.
