In the F1 British Grand Prix on the evening of the 3rd, Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu encountered a serious accident - his racing car was hit and flew up, rolled, and slid for a long distance under an inverted condition until it hit the fence and stopped. According to @F1 World Championship news, Albon, Zhou Guanyu and Russell who were involved in the accident have withdrawn from the competition.
This accident occurred at the start of the race that day. Multiple cars were involved in the accident and serious collisions occurred. Subsequently, a red flag was displayed and the race was temporarily suspended. After the accident, the Alfa Romeo team released news that Zhou Guanyu was conscious and was being evaluated at the track medical center.
Since then, F1 officially announced that Zhou Guanyu is in good condition and has left the track medical center. In addition to Zhou Guanyu, Williams driver Albon and Mercedes driver Russell also retired from the race due to the accident. The cars of Alpine driver Ocon and Toro Rosso driver Yuki Tsunoda were damaged to varying degrees and can continue to compete after repairs.
In the qualifying session on the 2nd, Zhou Guanyu finished ninth, setting a new personal best result in qualifying. He entered the third quarter of two consecutive qualifying sessions and defeated his teammate Bottas in three consecutive qualifying sessions.
According to the Alfa Romeo team, it was the Halo system on the car that protected Zhou Guanyu’s upper body. This is the first time that this system has protected the safety of F1 drivers since the Grosjean racing accident in 2020. On November 29, 2020, during the 2020 F1 Bahrain race, Haas team driver Gross lost control of his car and hit the metal guardrail. The cockpit ignited a fire and the car broke into two pieces. Grosjean left the burning racing car on his own. After examination, Grosjean only had minor burns on his hands and feet, and fractured ribs.
The reason why Zhou Guanyu and Grosjean survived was the Halo racing safety system that F1 has worked hard to build in recent years, as well as many "black technologies" that ensure the safety of the event. The Halo system is a safety system made of titanium alloy that provides head protection for racers driving racing cars at high speeds. A Halo weighs only 7 kilograms, but it is very strong. This is also the reason why Zhou Guanyu's car tilted and slid off the track, but Zhou Guanyu was intact.
