The New York Knicks are increasingly likely to land Brunson when free agency opens on Friday, with the team reportedly ready to offer him a lucrative four-year, $100 million contract. Not to mention they're ready for him to assume the starting point guard role and be the linchpin of their offense.

Prior to the huge contract Brunson was expected to receive, Kelly Kaplan of the Dallas Morning News revealed that Dallas could have signed Brunson to a cheaper contract. However, they never offered that contract to the rising star last summer.

Since last offseason, Brunson has been eligible for a four-year, $55 million contract extension, the second contract he signed during his rookie year in 2018.

But the Mavericks did not submit this contract to Brunson's camp before the season or at the midway point of the trade deadline - when a pre-trade deadline agreement would have made Brunson ineligible for inclusion in a potential trade from Dallas.

This contract is the same one Dorian Finney-Smith signed with the Mavericks immediately midway through last season. Speaking of which, the Mavericks may regret this decision now.

For what it's worth, the Mavs tried to give Brunson a new contract when he began to emerge in the second half of the 2021-22 season after not extending his contract the previous offseason. Despite this, the 25-year-old defender refuses to negotiate and wants to focus on the task at hand.

When free agency opens on Friday, Jaylen Brunson may actually end up Knicks Unfortunately for the Mavericks, there's nothing they can do if that happens .
