Recently, the reporter learned from Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine that the school’s traditional Chinese medicine resource team recently officially published a new species of Guizhou fern: "Suiyang Ear Fern" in the international plant taxonomy journal "PHYTOTAXA".
genus fern 2 has more than 500 species worldwide and is widely distributed around the world. It is the largest genus of the fern family, the third largest genus of ferns, and one of the most difficult groups to classify ferns. At present, there are 13 species of the genus Fine-cleaved Ear-fern group (including the newly discovered "Suiyang Ear-fern"), and 9 of them are distributed in Guizhou.
In June 2018, Wang Bo, Sun Qingwen, Wang Zehuan, and others from the School of Pharmacy of Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine conducted an medicinal plant survey in Suiyang County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. This plant was discovered in the karst landform limestone mountain valley. After more than three years of continuous field and introduction observation, combined with molecular biology research, it was finally determined to be a new plant species of the genus Flexothia fern genus Flexothia fern.
Wang Bo introduced that at present, less than 50 individuals of this species were found around the site of "Suiyang Ear Fern". According to the evaluation method of World Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), "Suiyang Ear Fern" was initially evaluated as critically endangered level.
"The distribution area of Suiyang Ear Fern is narrow, with a very small population, and a special system location." Wang Bo said that the discovery of this new species has important scientific research value for inferring the origin, evolution, geographical distribution and phylogenetic relationship of the Ear Fern species.
