Liu Ruiyu is a famous marine biology scientist, crustzoologist, founder of China's marine benthic biological ecology and pioneer of crustzoology. She has a wide range of research content, covers multiple fields, and has outstanding contributions. He has been responsible for completing a number of national and international marine research projects, biology and resource surveys, especially the national comprehensive marine survey, the China-Vietnam Beibu Gulf marine survey, the national coastal zone and sea coating resource survey, etc., and has obtained a large amount of valuable information for the country.
"Instant Noodle Expert"
On August 1, 1950, Qingdao Marine Biology Research Office was established.
Liu Ruiyu came from Beijing to Qingdao . He is one of the 28 veterans of the Qingdao Marine Biology Research Office of the Institute of Aquatic Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Engaging in marine biology research has brought him into a vast world and a new field of research, and has also become his lifelong career.
Since the establishment of Qingdao Marine Biological Room, Liu Ruiyu has begun to conduct China Sea biological species resource survey and specimen collection. In the 1950s, from the Yellow Sea, along the Bohai , Bohai to the Hainan coast, every time I collected, I brought my own luggage and brought my own dry food; when I went to Hainan for investigation, I often rode a ox cart; in order to catch the tide, I often got up in the dark or in the middle of the night, and never complained. Afterwards, Liu Ruiyu led and participated in a number of marine surveys and accumulated a large number of specimens.
Since the 1970s, under the leadership of Liu Ruiyu, the research team conducted a comprehensive coastal collection along China's coastal borders, leaving their footprints from Yalu River Estuary to Xisha and Nansha Islands in , the national ocean census, the development of multiple international cooperation projects, and the current ocean-deep sea survey, etc.
Liu Ruiyu devoted his life to the career of marine science . He is dedicated to improving the subjects he is engaged in and achieving world-class standards. He comes early and leaves late every day, regardless of wind and rain, has no fixed schedule, and often works until late at night. After knowing that he had the habit of working at night, people on business trips with him were unwilling to sleep in the same room with him. In class, sometimes he can't go home at noon or dinner, so he uses instant noodles as his staple food or eats some chocolate to satisfy his hunger. People often see his office cleaned up a box of instant noodles bags. Some people joked that he was a "instant noodle expert".
I have been wearing a sweater for more than ten years, using paper on both sides, and trying to turn on the lights in the room as little as possible. I never go to economy class when I go on business trips - this is Liu Ruiyu.
is different from the simplicity of daily life. In scientific research, Liu Ruiyu always closely links his personal ideals with marine science, and he always has infinite enthusiasm for work. He is a well-known "workaholic" at the Ocean Institute. He always works hard at the desk filled with books. Even at the age of eighty, he often works overtime in the office until late at night.
As the founder of China's marine benthic biological ecology and pioneer of crustzoology, Liu Ruiyu has been climbing unremittingly on the road of science throughout her life. He actively explored the reproductive characteristics of China's shrimp life history, promoted artificial seedling cultivation and breeding of shrimp, and fundamentally changed the situation in which my country relied on fishing for natural shrimp breeding for a long time.
"Life one day, work one day"
Marine biological surveys often require going out to sea to catch up with the tide. Liu Ruiyu always leads by taking advantage of her age.
"In 1990, I participated in the 'Sino-Germany Joint Hainan Island Marine Biology Expedition' project hosted by Mr. Liu. Mr. Liu took us out to sea at 4:30 in the morning. It was still dark. The pier was several meters away from the boat. The boat was shaking. We looked at each other and didn't dare to get off the boat. 'What are you waiting for? Jump!' With a 'bang' sound, Mr. Liu was the first to jump down." Liu Jing, a student of Liu Ruiyu and a researcher at the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, still can't believe it when recalling it. At that time, Liu Ruiyu was already nearly 70 years old.
Liu Jing visited Liu Ruiyu at the hospital six times. Every time, he would instruct Liu Jing earnestly: "The subject of fish is very important, you must support it..." "Who knew that the sir had left so quickly. Now, every time I walked to the door of his office, I would stop, and the teacher's advice was still in my ears." Liu Jing said.
A mountain-like office, boring and monotonous laboratory, and bumpy and shaking inspection boat are the stage for Liu Ruiyu to explore intently. "I won't talk about my life. My philosophy of life is to live and work every day," he said.
In the memory of Liu Ruiyu's secretary Ji Xiaoqing, it is normal for Liu Ruiyu to work without holidays, often "driving at night", and wasting time in canteen eating and using instant noodles to satisfy her hunger. Even three months before his death, his schedule was still very compact, and he frequently went out for meetings by plane and train.
What Liu Ruiyu’s colleagues and students are unforgettable to memorize is his noble character of being indifferent to fame and fortune and willing to be a stepping stone for others. , deputy director of the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, , said that marine biology classification is a work that is both tedious and boring and difficult to produce results. Liu Ruiyu found that my country's basic research in this field is relatively weak, and insisted on leading doctoral and master's students in person at the age of 85.
Considering that Liu Ruiyu's life was not well-off, especially the actual situation of her son suffering from heart and tumor diseases and her daughter-in-law also suffering from serious tumor diseases, the relevant parties once declined his request. Before his death, Liu Ruiyu once again proposed the wish to donate 1 million yuan. On June 14, 2012, he signed his name on the donation commission agreement with his trembling hands and wrote "Anytime" in the donation time column. On his dying day, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Graduate Education Foundation accepted his request and officially established the "Liu Ruiyu Marine Science Award Fund" to fulfill his last wish.
As the leader of the local organization of the Jiusan Society, Liu Ruiyu led the majority of members to conduct in-depth research on major issues such as marine ecological protection, marine environmental pollution prevention and control, and rational development of fishery resources, and provide suggestions. He loudly called for the rational development and protection of marine resources, and his proposal of "Suggestions on Protecting Marine Resources and Developing Marine Fisheries" attracted great attention from relevant parties.
The candle is still alive after burning out.
Liu Ruiyu compiled and painted my country's first "Bohuang East Sea Fishing Chart - Oceanographic Picture Gallery"; organized and jointly compiled the " China Marine Biology List " (Chinese and English), recording the names and distributions of more than 20,000 marine organisms at all 46, correcting important error identification, clarifying the confusion of species, and truly reflecting the current status of biodiversity in China, and is hailed by international authorities as a "mile-stealing work" in biodiversity research.
In the past 65 years of engaged in marine science and education, Liu Ruiyu has written more than 200 papers and 21 monographs; he has won more than 30 items: the National Science Conference Award, the National Natural Science Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Major Science and Technology Achievement Award, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Natural Science Award, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Science Progress Award, the Shandong Provincial Science Conference Award, the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the Qingdao Municipal Highest Science and Technology Award, the World Crustacean Society Outstanding Research Contribution Award, and more than 30 items.
Mr. Liu Ruiyu is tireless in teaching and rewarding the poor, and has cultivated a large number of high-level scientific and technological talents for both at home and abroad, many of whom have become academic leaders of relevant disciplines at home and abroad. He loves the Party, the country, and the people, and devotes his life to the marine science cause of the motherland. He is a role model for the learning of scientific and technological workers.
A wise elder who regards the ocean as his life and devotes himself to the cause of marine science in the motherland for his whole life, after devoted his last life to the cause he loves, he slept on the blue and vast sea. On July 16, 2012, Liu Ruiyu, a famous marine biologist, crustzoologist, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed away in Qingdao, Shandong at the age of 90.
