Hu Yuxian was born in Beijing on October 14, 1922. His ancestral home was Wuchang, Hubei. He moved with his family when he was young and eventually settled in Wuhan, Hubei. In 1940, he was promoted to Nanjing Central University (now Nanjing University), and a year later he transferred to National Chiao Tung University (now Shanghai) Jiaotong University) Department of Civil Engineering. In 1944, Hu Yuxian traversed the Japanese army's blockade on foot with luggage on his back, and moved from Nanjing to Chongqing to continue his studies. He completed his university studies in 1946.

In 1955, Hu Yuxian and his family gave up the superior living conditions in the United States.Return to the embrace of the motherland without hesitation. When Hu Yuxian returned to the country and boarded the ship, a US official once said with a sarcasm: "You will be a general when you go back." Hu Yuxian replied firmly: "No, I will only be a soldier when I return."

In addition, Mr. Hu Yuxian took the lead in researching the impact of site conditions on earthquakes and earthquake damage, and applied the main conclusions to the seismic design of building structures in China.

When studying the influence of site conditions on the building structure, the earthquake intensity was used. Hu Yuxian considered: First, a weak site is likely to cause foundation failure; second, a weak site may change the characteristics of ground motion. Simply increasing the intensity of does not reflect the impact of site conditions well. He proposed that should use a different response spectrum in the seismic design. This has important guiding role and application value for the revision of intensity standards, intensity zoning, and revision of seismic codes. adopted the influence of site conditions on the response spectrum in the seismic code.
