The highest number of Amazon rainforests is higher than the buildings in your city.
is much higher.
Researchers have discovered this very high species in the Brazilian Iratapuru River Nature Reserve. This tree, angelim vermelho (scientific name: Dinizia excelsa), is equivalent to 25 floors in height. The researchers wrote on the Phys.org website that its height is 88 meters and its diameter is 9.9 meters.
Helped to organize the expedition, Diego Armando Silva, a forest engineer from Amapa Federal University, finally discovered the tree. The project began in 2019, when the team saw the satellite image of the tree.
According to Silva, they did not measure the actual height.
"This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Very sacred," he told AFP . "You are in the jungle, a place that humans have never visited, a dense natural environment."
is located at the bottom of the 88.5-meter-high angelim vermelho tree. Each member of the research team has his own experience. In mid-September, the final exploration lasted for 13 days, with people traveling 250 kilometers along the river and hiking 20 kilometers through the pristine hilly jungle.
Spider bites and rainforest deforestation
According to the Phys.org website, this is after the first expedition that did not reach trees at all. Large quantities of cut down, scarce supplies, and the threat of disease caused them to return. Even this year, an expedition member encountered what the team doctor thought was poisonous spider bites.
Once the team reaches the location of the forest giant tree, people camp in place, collect samples, and estimate the age of the trees. Silva believes that the tree is between 400 and 600 years old. There are a large number of other amazing trees in the same area, and the team's mission is to find out why trees in this particular area grow to such amazing heights, and the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the trees.
At the same time, the threat of cutting down causes a large amount of carbon molecules to be released here. Jakeline Pereira, an environmental organization in the Imazon region, helped organize the expedition. She said loggers reward angelim vermelho trees, and illegal gold diggers will also harm the trees here.
"We are extremely excited about this discovery," she said. "This is crucial during the period when the Amazon rainforest faces such a serious forest view."
Today, the tallest living tree in the world is 115 meters of Hyperion located in the Redwoods area, California. The U.S. National Park Service recently banned people from visiting it. And the tree that lives the longest is Alerce Milenario in Chile , which may be the longest-living living organism on the planet.
