It is understood that the new coronavirus variant of BQ.1.1 appeared as early as July and was first discovered in Nigeria . By October, it had attracted widespread attention from the global scientific community and media. The name of "Hellhound " is the code name given by netizens. It is not an official name to distinguish it from other strains that were popular at the same time, such as BM.1.1.1, BA.2.75, BA.4.6, etc.
Reuters mentioned in a report on October 21 that according to the information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the BQ.1 series strains (labeled as BQ.1*) and their subtype strains BQ.1.1 are members of more than 300 Omickron variant strain families currently popular around the world. Nearly 95% of these members are "direct descendants" of Omickron variant BA.5, and BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are no exception.
WHO's novel coronavirus evolution technology consulting group (TAG-VE) mentioned in a statement issued on October 27 that BQ.1*, as a variant of the Omickron subtype BA.5, has spike mutations at some key antigen sites. Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) also reported that an animal study showed that the ability of the Omickron subtype strain BQ.1.1 to cause symptoms is comparable or lower than that of the early novel coronavirus variant.
