Recently, "The mutant strain of the new crown , code-named 'hellhound' in Japan, was it crazy to kill in Japan?" Related news spread online. On the 13th, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention WeChat public account published an article "About BQ.1, a few things you need to know--" to respond to this:

BQ.1 is the sixth generation sub-branch of Omickron BA.5 during the popular spread of the population, through the mutation and transformation of the virus . BQ.1.1 is the first generation sub-branch of BQ.1. These evolutionary branches have significantly weakened their pathogenicity, and the proportion of severe illness and death is significantly lower than that of early prevalent mutant strains. Although

BQ.1 has attracted global attention, has not yet reported any country that has reported an increase in pathogenicity of BQ.1 and its sub-branch infections, nor has there been an increase in hospitalization and mortality rates. A recent Japanese animal study showed that the pathogenicity of BQ.1.1 may be the same or less than BA.5.

"Hellhound" mutant strain ravaged Japan? In fact, it is...

This article is reprinted from the WeChat public account " Xinmin Weekly " (ID: xinminzhoukan). The original text was first published on December 12, 2022. The original title is "The "Hellhound" mutant strain rages Japan? Actually, it is…”, which does not represent the view of Outlook Think Tank.

Since Japan entered winter, it has experienced a new wave of epidemics, with the daily death toll per million people showing an increase. Recently, rumors have emerged online that a new mutant strain called BQ1.1 has appeared. The strain has high infectivity and mortality rate, and is also called the "hellhound", which has "killed crazy" in Japan. What kind of variant is

BQ.1.1? Is the name "Hellhound" exaggerated?

It is understood that the new coronavirus variant of BQ.1.1 appeared as early as July and was first discovered in Nigeria . By October, it had attracted widespread attention from the global scientific community and media. The name of "Hellhound " is the code name given by netizens. It is not an official name to distinguish it from other strains that were popular at the same time, such as BM.1.1.1, BA.2.75, BA.4.6, etc.

Reuters mentioned in a report on October 21 that according to the information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the BQ.1 series strains (labeled as BQ.1*) and their subtype strains BQ.1.1 are members of more than 300 Omickron variant strain families currently popular around the world. Nearly 95% of these members are "direct descendants" of Omickron variant BA.5, and BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 are no exception.

WHO's novel coronavirus evolution technology consulting group (TAG-VE) mentioned in a statement issued on October 27 that BQ.1*, as a variant of the Omickron subtype BA.5, has spike mutations at some key antigen sites. The spike mutation of BQ.1.1 appears at a critical antigen site, which means that the BQ.1* virus may have an advantage in immune escape than other Omickron subtype strains.

A report from the University of Texas research team published on December 6 in the journal Nature Medicine proves this. The report pointed out that the number of antibodies produced by vaccine when encountering BQ.1.1 is 4 times lower than when encountering BA.5 strain.

However, , director of , Beijing Institute of Respiratory Diseases, , Tong Zhaohui, , introduced in an interview with the media that the new coronavirus has undergone several generations of mutations, and the Omickron mutations, BA.4 and BA.5, have changed from BA.2, and BF.7 has changed from BA.4 and BA.5. As long as the virus is still a branch of Omickron, the toxicity, pathogenicity and infectivity of the virus will not change substantially. What is more worthy of attention is that there is no direct evidence at present that in Japan, the increase in death toll is closely related to the emergence of the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 strains. As of December 5, statistics from Japan showed that the current dominant strain in Japan is still BA.5, accounting for 87.76% of the total number of cases, while the proportion of the BQ.1 strain is about 6.12%.

The proportion of infections among the new coronavirus variants in Japan (December 5, 2022)

The Asahi Shimbun quoted the opinions of members of the Japanese Ministry of Health’s new coronavirus expert team, saying that although BQ.1 may be more likely to spread, the risk of severe illness in infected patients is basically the same as that of patients infected with the BA.5 strain.

Japan Broadcasting Association (NHK) also reported that an animal study showed that the ability of the Omickron subtype strain BQ.1.1 to cause symptoms is comparable or lower than that of the early novel coronavirus variant. The study was published by a G2P-Japan research team led by Professor Sato Kei of the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Tokyo. This paper has not yet been formally peer-reviewed.

Kei Sato said that although the research results may not be directly applicable to humans, the pathogenicity of the latest variant of the new coronavirus has not increased, which is good news. , but he added that anti-infection measures should continue to be taken as the virus is still very transmissible.

At present, scientists still have no unified conclusion on the infectivity, immune escape and serious disease caused by the strain BQ.1* or BQ.1.1.

But no matter what, each of us should be the first person in charge of our health, have a positive attitude, and have a scientific "playing style".

First, don’t panic and anxiety. Scientifically view the mutation of the strain without panic.

The second is to stop resting without slacking off. Epidemic prevention measures should be adjusted in a timely manner, and some personal protection measures should still be adhered to and must not be relaxed. Wear masks, maintain social distance, wash your hands frequently, and open windows more often.

Third, "one old and one young" still needs special attention.
