During the reign of Emperor Yang of Sui, in order to strengthen feudal rule, facilitate the transportation of canals and military, millions of migrant workers were requisitioned to make the Grand Canal that runs through the north and south.
The canal project is carried out in four sections. In 605 (the first year of Daye), more than 1 million migrant workers in Henan and Huaibei were recruited to open the Ji Canal. From Xiyuan (west of Luoyang ), the valley and Luo Ershui reach Yellow River , and then from Banzhu (now northeast of Xingyang, Henan) the Yellow River water into Bian Water . It also leads the Bian River from the east of Daliang (now Kaifeng, Henan) to the Si River, and finally reaches Huai River in Qingjiang (now Huaiyin, Jiangsu). In the same year, more than 100,000 migrant workers in Huainan were recruited to repair Hangou , widening the old Hangou road opened by King Wu Fuchai , so that the water could reach the south of the Yangtze River from the south of the Hangou (now southwest of Yangzhou, Jiangsu) and communicating with the Huai River and the Yangtze River. The above two sections are mainly used for Emperor Yang of Sui to travel to Xingjiangdu to drive dragon boats, so they are also called "Yuhe". In 608 (the fourth year of Daye), more than 1 million migrant workers in Hebei were dispatched to dig Yongji Canal , mainly using natural river channels to divert the Yellow River water to the north to connect Qinshui and Qishui, and to Tianjin to meet the Baihe into the sea, and then to the north to connect the Zhuojun (now Beijing). In 610 (the sixth year of Daye), more than 2.1 million migrant workers in Jiangnan were recruited to develop Jingkou (now Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu) to Yuhang (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang) and enter Jiangnan River in Qiantang River .
This section of canal is mainly made by widening and deepening the old small river channel in the south of the Yangtze River. The Grand Canal starts from Zhuojun in the north, passes through Luoyang in the middle, and ends at Yuhang in the south, with a total length of more than 5,000 miles.
It communicates with the five major water systems of Haihe , Yellow River, Huaihe , Yangtze River and Qiantang River. It is one of the greatest canal projects in the world and occupies an important position in the history of world water conservancy. The opening of the Grand Canal is conducive to consolidating national unity, strengthening economic and cultural exchanges between the north and the south, and becoming a major artery of north and the south transportation.
The Grand Canal not only played a major role at that time, but also benefited future generations, and its role has not diminished after thousands of years. Sui Dynasty The working people participated in the battle to build the river and made hard work and great sacrifices. The Grand Canal is the crystallization of the blood, sweat and wisdom of the working people of the Sui Dynasty, and is the great contribution of the people of the Sui Dynasty to Chinese history.
