Many people should have watched the movie " Pi's Fantasy Drifting ". The film tells the story of an Indian Pi family moving to Canada on a steamship. They encountered a shipwreck on the way and all their families died, only he survived. He drifted on a lifesaving boat for 227 days with a Bengal tiger, during which time, the man and the tiger formed a strange relationship, and eventually defeated the dilemma together and were reborn.
movies are of course works of art, and what we are going to share today is a real story of drifting alone on the sea: he relied on a liferaft and drifted alone on the sea for 133 days and was finally rescued.
11918, Pan Lin was born on Hainan Island, China. Unlike many children in that era, he went to school when he was a child, thanks to the money sent by his brothers from the factory. At the age of 16, Pan Lin's father sent him to a British passenger cargo ship as a waiter, and since then he began his life on a boat.
1942, during World War II , Pan Lin served as deputy clerk on the British armed merchant ship SS Benlomond, which sailed from Cape Town to Paramaribo and New York. Although the ship was equipped with weapons, it moved slowly and sailed alone.
On November 23, a German submarine U-172 intercepted the ship and sank the ship with two torpedo . When the ship sank, Pan Lin grabbed a life jacket and jumped into the sea before the ship's boiler exploded.
After staying in the water for about two hours, he found an eight-foot square wooden life raft and immediately climbed onto it. There were a lot of first aid supplies on the raft: a few cans of biscuits, a can of forty liters of water, some chocolates, a bag of candy cubes, some flares, two cigarette bottles and a flashlight.
Pan Lin initially relied on these supplies to maintain his life. After a while, he had to think of other ways to save his life. He began to rely on canvas to collect rainwater, use an iron wire to make a fish hook, and use a hemp rope to make a fishing line to fish. He also dug a nail from the wooden board on the raft and bend it into a hook to catch a big fish.
When he catches a fish, he will use a knife made of a biscuit jar to cut the fish open, and then put the fish on a hemp rope on a raft and dry it and store it. Once, a big storm hit him, losing all his dried fish and dirtying his water. Pan Lin, who barely survived, caught a sea of birds and drank its blood to survive.
Later, he saw the shark and decided to catch the shark. He used the wreckage of a bird as bait. A shark of about one meter was hooked. Pan Lin pulled it onto the raft with force, and then he subdued the shark with half the sea water as a weapon. He cut the shark open and sucked blood from its liver. It had been raining for several days and he was out of water. The shark had allowed him to survive the most difficult time.
In addition to food and water, Pan Lin must also deal with sunburn , seasickness, and the pain of asking for help but being ignored. During his drift alone, a cargo ship was first passed by, and then a team of U.S. Navy patrol aircraft, but because he was Chinese, they did not help.
Pan Lin recorded his days by tying a rope knot. After an incredible 133 days, he drifted near Brazil, and then three Brazilian fishermen discovered the raft , and he was finally rescued.
During this rafting adventure, Pan Lin lost 9.1 kilograms and stayed in a Brazilian hospital for four weeks. After that, the British consul arranged for him to return to the UK via Miami and New York. After returning to the UK, he received the medal awarded by King George VI, and the British Royal Navy incorporated his story into the manual of survival skills.
Later, Pan Lin immigrated to the United States and died in Brooklyn on January 4, 1991 at the age of 72.
Pan Lin's experience is really hard to believe. In addition to survival skills, his desire to survive and strong willpower in desperate situations are important reasons why he was finally rescued.
