In the previous article, the author talked to you about the changes in zoning and economic development in various cities in Jiangsu Province, such as Suzhou City , Wuxi City , Changzhou City , etc. Today, let’s talk about , Wujin District, in Jiangsu Province. Wujin District is under the management of Changzhou City and is an important part of Changzhou City. Over the past few decades, there has been repeated competition between Changzhou City and Suzhou City around the ownership of Wujin District. Today, let’s talk about this issue.
First of all, let’s talk about the specific situation in Jiangsu Province. Jiangsu Province is a major economic, grain and population province in my country. According to the data statistics from Qipu in 2020, the total population of Jiangsu Province has reached more than 84 million. Among all provinces in the country, such a population base is very high. Among all provinces in my country, only five provinces have a population of more than 80 million. In 2021, Jiangsu Province ranked second in the country in terms of total GDP, reaching 11.6 trillion, which is a very good level.
In terms of total GDP, Jiangsu Province even surpasses some of the world's middle-developed countries . In terms of per capita economy, Jiangsu Province is also very strong. At present, Jiangsu Province has 13 prefecture-level cities under its jurisdiction, commonly known as the "Thirteen Taibao". They are: Nanjing City, Suzhou City, Wuxi City, Nantong City, , Changzhou City, Zhenjiang City, , Yangzhou City, , Taizhou City, , Yancheng City, , Huai'an City, , Xuzhou City, , Suqian City, , Lianyungang City, . Among them, Nanjing is the capital city of Jiangsu Province and is also one of the 15 sub-provincial cities in the country.
Regionally, Jiangsu Province is composed of northern Jiangsu, southern Jiangsu , central Jiangsu and other places. Southern Jiangsu region belongs to the standard Jiangnan culture. It has very obvious characteristics in many aspects such as food, accent, customs, architectural style, etc., such as sweet taste, Kunqu , gardens, etc., which are very distinctive. The northern Jiangsu region includes Xuzhou , Lianyungang , Suqian , Huai'an and other places, which are closer to the north in many aspects. For example, Xuzhou's diet, accent, etc. are very close to Zhongyuan and Qilu .
A friend of the author is a girl from Xuzhou who is very spicy. When speaking dialect, it is very close to Shandong and southern accent. As for the central Jiangsu region, it is the standard Jianghuai culture, which is a unique school in all aspects. In terms of district classification, Wujin District is under the management of Changzhou prefecture-level cities. Wujin District has strong economic strength. In 2021, the total population of Wujin District will be more than 1.7 million. In 2021, the total GDP of Wujin District reached more than 290 billion. In terms of per capita economy, the per capita GDP in Wujin District has reached a very good level.
Wujin District was predecessor of Wujin county-level cities and Wujin County. Over the decades of history, there has been repeated competition between Changzhou City and Suzhou City around the ownership of Wujin County. So, why was Wujin County included in Changzhou City and gradually evolved into Wujin County-level city and Wujin District?
Wujin County has a long history, and the name Wujin appeared in the Three Kingdoms period. Back then, the King of Wu of the Great Wei Dynasty, Sun Quan, took the meaning of "advance into the Central Plains with Wuwu" and formed Wujin County. As we all know, my country's provincial system originated from the Yuan Dynasty . After hundreds of years of adjustment and improvement in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it has gradually formed the basic framework pattern of inland provinces. During the period of the Ming Dynasty, Jiangsu and Anhui were called Nanzhili. After the Qing Dynasty established its rule, the status of Nanzhili decreased and it was renamed Jiangnan Province .
Jiangnan Province has a large population, a developed economy, dense water network, and a vast area, making it very difficult to manage. In 1667, in the early days of Emperor Kangxi's reign, the Qing Dynasty abolished Jiangnan Province and formed Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province. Among them, Jiangsu Province has 2 provincial capitals, the Governor of Liangjiang is in Jiangning Prefecture , and the Governor of Jiangsu is in Suzhou Prefecture . As of the reign of Emperor Qianlong, a zoning pattern of 8 prefectures, 3 , and 1 zhili department was formed in Jiangsu Province.
is: Jiangning Prefecture, Suzhou Prefecture, Songjiang Prefecture , Changzhou Prefecture , Zhenjiang Prefecture , Huai'an Prefecture , Yangzhou Prefecture , Xuzhou Prefecture , Taicang Prefecture , Haizhou, Tongzhou , Haimen Hall . At that time, Changzhou Prefecture had eight counties under its jurisdiction, namely: Wujin County, Yanghu County, Wuxi County, Jinkui County, Yixing County, Jingxi County, Jiangyin County, and Jingjiang County. Therefore, the reputation of "Zhongwu Yaofu, Eight Cities Famous Capital" appeared.
1912, after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, which had ruled for more than 200 years, our country entered a period of warlord melee. Jiangsu Province has a developed economy and an important geographical location. Warlords from all over the country have fought for each other, causing great damage to the economy of Jiangsu. In addition to floods, locust plague and other series of natural disasters, , the lives of the people of Jiangsu are very hard. In a blink of an eye, it was the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China. With the basic end of large-scale wars, our country entered the stage of post-war reconstruction and economic development.
At first, due to actual management needs, Jiangsu Province was temporarily abolished and , the North Suzhou Administrative Region, and the South Suzhou Administrative Region were established. The Administrative District belongs to the temporary zoning in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, benchmarking various provinces. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in addition to the two administrative districts, my country also established a series of administrative districts such as the North Sichuan Administration District and the East Sichuan Administration District of . In 1949, on the basis of some urban areas of Wujin County, a county-level city of Changzhou was established, which was under the management of Changzhou Special District. In this stage, Changzhou Special Zone has 1 county-level city and 6 counties under its jurisdiction, namely: Changzhou County-level city, Wujin County, Jiangyin County, Jintan County, Liyang County, Yixing County, and Wuxi County. Excessively complex zoning is not conducive to economic development. In October 1952, the northern and southern Jiangsu Administrative Regions were abolished and Jiangsu Province was reorganized. In 1953, the Changzhou Special Zone was abolished, and several counties under its jurisdiction were included in the surrounding Zhenjiang Special Zone and Suzhou Special Zone. Among them, Wujin County is included in the Zhenjiang Special Zone for management.
For actual needs, in 1956, Wujin County, Zhenjiang District, was included in the Suzhou District management. In 1958, in the new round of zoning changes in Jiangsu Province, Wujin County, which had been managed by Suzhou District for two years, was re-registered into Zhenjiang District for management. In the same year, the Zhenjiang District Administration Agency moved to a county-level city in Changzhou, and the Zhenjiang District was renamed Changzhou District. However, this stage is very short-lived. In 1962, Changzhou county-level city was promoted to prefecture-level city, and Changzhou Special District was renamed Zhenjiang Special District.
In 1983, Zhenjiang area was abolished, and the counties under its jurisdiction were assigned to the management of surrounding prefecture-level cities. Among them, Wujin County is included in the management of Changzhou prefecture-level cities. As part of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, Changzhou's economic development is very rapid. In 1995, Wujin County, under Changzhou City, was abolished and Wujin County-level city was established. After entering the 21st century, the main urban area of Changzhou City further expanded and the urban population further increased. In 2002, Wujin County-level city was abolished and Wujin District was established.
In recent years, Changzhou City's zoning structure has been further adjusted. In 2015, Qishuyan District was incorporated into Wujin District and a new Wujin District was formed. At present, Wujin District is an important part of Changzhou City, with a developed economy and a very complete industrial chain in all aspects.
There are many more stories about the adjustment of various regions in my country. The author will chat with you slowly in future articles.
