This is the 1001st real person we tell
My name is Liu Zheyu
(January 2021, I am in Hokkaido)
1995, I was born in Lianyungang, Jiangsu. My hometown faces the sea and is backed by mountains. It has a humid climate, distinct seasons and particularly rich marine resources.
One place of water and soil nourishes the other people. I have been in contact with marine life since I was a child. Not only in an aquarium, but also on the dining table. My biggest dream when I was a child was to open an aquarium.
My father likes to trade stocks, and his family’s financial conditions are pretty good. My parents often take me to travel everywhere, so I have been cheerful and energetic since I was a child.
In the summer vacation of 2007, my parents took me to Zhoushan, Zhejiang for a trip and went to visit Putuo Mountain . Not long after he came back, my father sold all his financial products, and then it was the well-known bear market in 2008.
(At August 2019, I attended the Marine Environmental Protection Exchange Conference in Qunsan City, South Korea)
Since then, my parents have felt that it must be Guanyin Bodhisattva that bless them in the dark, so they go to Putuo Mountain every year. Our family also has an indissoluble bond with Zhoushan .
My parents almost paid the price for my happy education in the end. They did not ask me too much about my studies, and my grades in my class have always been unknown.
Until the final exam for the second year of high school, I got the second to last place, and the last one was an art student - the scores were enough to go to a very good university. Only then did I realize that I had to start studying hard. After
, I locked my favorite poster record in the cabinet, got up at 5:30 every morning, and often stayed up until 12:00 at night before going to bed. My parents also supported me and signed me up for a cram school.
(studying in science and technology festival activities in high school)
Hard work pays off. After the 2014 college entrance examination, my grades were astonishing as the undergraduate line.
When filling out the application form, our family looked at the registration booklet of the university and discovered at a glance the Zhejiang Ocean University located in Zhoushan, as well as the aquaculture major that I like. Afterwards, I applied to this university without thinking.
Finally, I got my wish and entered the university campus. At first, I thought that the major of aquaculture was to learn how to raise small fish and shrimps. But after entering the school, I found that there is a lot of knowledge. Different new types of fish species, genetic improvement, ecological and environmental protection, etc. are also subjects of aquaculture.
We have many experimental courses, and each important theoretical course will be accompanied by corresponding experimental courses.
(Panorama of Zhejiang Ocean University)
Remember, in an anatomy class, we learned to dissect stone frog . The teacher said humorously, "Be careful, your knife costs 100 yuan." I was surprised at the time that a small frog was so valuable?
After class, I checked a lot of information and found that the stone frog is different from the common bullfrog . Bullfrogs are about 16 yuan per kilogram on the market, but stone frogs can be sold for 200 yuan per kilogram. Stone frog is rich in nutrition. In addition to having medicinal value, its protein content is the same as that of lean beef, and its fat content is only 4% of lean beef.
At the same time, the breeding cycle of stone frogs is as long as three years, while wild stone frogs is difficult to capture. The artificial breeding scale is small and the survival rate is low. Most of the breeding farms can only be built on the mountain.
(October 2018, at Zhejiang Ocean University Library)
, I suddenly had a thought: "It's too hard to breed people. When it comes to bad weather, I will lose all my money. It would be great if the stone frog could be raised on the plain!"
happened to be the case. At that time, the National Challenge Cup Entrepreneurship Competition was very popular. I seized the opportunity and told my thoughts to the counselor Mr. Jiang, who asked me to give it a brave try.
I discussed with my parents. They support me very much and are willing to invest 300,000 yuan in me.
With the help of Teacher Jiang, I quickly formed a college student entrepreneurial team and received guidance from Professor Wang Zhizheng , an ecological breeding expert. In this way, my first company was born.
I named the company "Zhoushan Yuanmao", which means that I can still be rich by moving the stone frog to the plain.
(In 2016, I (the first on the right of the podium) was at the Zhoushan Municipal Government’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Roadshow site)
, in order to obtain accurate experimental results, I went to the deep mountain breeding farm in Yuyao many times, and it took more than an hour to ride the bus up the mountain. Every time I go to the farm, I vomit for about ten minutes.
The physical pain is still tolerant. The countless failures of the experiment hit me hard, and I even wanted to give up for a while.
Fortunately, with Professor Wang's guidance, we are targeted and focus on several known feasible improvement points.
Finally, we found that the most important thing to "moving" the stone frog from the mountain to the flat ground is the regulation of water quality (thousands of words of trade secrets are omitted here). In this way, we quickly applied for a number of invention and utility model patents, and the school reimbursed all patent application fees for us.
(November 2015, Shifrog Experimental Group, the second on the left is me)
But unexpectedly, technology is just the first step to success, and gaining the trust of farmers is the key. The owners of the farm saw that we were a group of young college students and looked down on us. Even if we were worn out, they were unwilling to try new technologies.
We visit door to door to understand the difficulties they have in their breeding and provide viable solutions to gain their trust. In the end, our sincerity moved one person, and with the first one, there was a second one. In the end, many farms signed cooperation intentions with us.
These experiences once again made me understand a truth: never give up or give up, failure is often only one last step away from success.
has been founded for three years and I have made a net profit of 210,000 yuan. Although this money is insignificant to the hardship I have paid, what makes me most proud is that our contribution to the construction of ecological civilization - wild stone frogs are quite scarce, and we have released a total of 2,000 young frogs.
(In December 2015, in Yuyao, Zhejiang, I guided local stone frog farmers until late at night, the first one on the left is me)
The release process is not simple. In order to make the farmed stone frogs adapt to the wild environment, we must resume wild training for the stone frogs before releasing them, so that after they go to the wild, they will not encounter unexpected problems (such as being eaten by natural enemies such as mice and snakes, and not adapting to the natural water temperature and humidity, etc.).
In daily life, I have a cheerful personality and have the generous and loyalty of northerners. The teachers and classmates all recognized me very much, and I was elected as the president of the Student Union.
With the success of entrepreneurship and the identity of the president of the student union, I became a storied figure in the school for a time. I spent all my time on the student union and company entrepreneurship, but I gradually got away from my girlfriend and finally broke up.
(In January 2017, in Zhoushan, I was on the road show to build a second company)
At that time, the first company was successful in starting a business and the situation was very good. At the end of my junior year, I also planned to build a second company with my junior, which was also preparing to fulfill my childhood dream - to open an ornamental fish breeding technology company.
Just as I was about to do a big fight, Professor Wang's words deeply touched me: "People will have different missions at different stages. If you do other things at a stage where you could quickly absorb knowledge and have flexible thinking, even if your small business is prosperous, will you really not regret it in the future?"
is very glad that at the critical stage of my life, such a mentor guides me to a broader path in life.
So, I closed the company and devoted myself to preparing for the postgraduate entrance examination. I seem to be back in my senior year, learning in the library until late at night every day, swimming in the ocean of knowledge, and at the same time I forget the pain of breaking up love.
(In 2016, I was at Zhejiang Ocean University)
Finally, I successfully got ashore. In 2018, I officially joined Professor Wang for postgraduate study, and my research topic was the development of crucian carp breeding technology.
Research First, shortly after the start of the school, the school organized a master's degree program initiated by Tokyo Ocean University for marine universities in China, Japan and South Korea. It enrolls a total of 15 people each year. During the two or three years of research, you can go to Tokyo Ocean University to study for double degree .
I seized this opportunity and, after hard work, became one of the two people admitted to the school. In this way, I embarked on the path of academic research as I wished, and all of this was the best arrangement.
In September 2019, I applied for a visa with the assistance of a Japanese counselor and flew from Ningbo to Tokyo, Japan. When the plane took off, I felt that life was bright and the future was promising.
(October 2019, Tokyo Ocean University admission ceremony)
Tokyo Ocean University is one of the few national universities in Japan. The tuition fee is very cheap, only about 30,000 yuan a year. The majority of living expenses are renting a house. I applied to move into the school dormitory and only had to pay 1,000 yuan a month.
A master's degree in Japan requires about 10 classes, three courses per week, and other time is freely arranged.
Because there are many international students from different countries in the laboratory, the tutor does not give you clear tasks like in China, nor does it have a clear sign-in system. Although this seems very good, in fact, if you don’t have a clear plan, you may not be able to graduate.
In Japan, you need to think of a topic you are interested in, then discuss it with the teacher, and finally determine a feasible plan; in China, the direction of the general topic is directly inherited from the existing ones in the laboratory. This is the biggest difference in research between the two countries.
(August 2022, surveyed in Hakodate, Hokkaido)
In addition, domestic requirements for publication of journal papers are very high, but Japan does not pay much attention to it and only cares about the final graduation thesis.
As far as I know, most Japanese schools do not have the requirements for publishing journal papers, and even doctoral students only need to publish two international journals.
The two countries have two different aspects of the training and investigation directions for students.
Because I came to Japan to study through the project, there is no requirement for basic Japanese language. You can choose courses taught in English when choosing courses. This is very friendly to us.
In 2018, I had been to Japan. At that time, I was just going to academic exchanges. I felt like a calves were not afraid of tigers. While I was preparing to study the materials, my companions and I played Tokyo and Nagoya all over.
At that time, I was completely a tourist mentality, and I didn’t have to worry about language issues, nor did I need to integrate myself into Japanese society.
(2018, Kamakura)
came to Japan for the second time. At first I thought Tokyo was an international metropolis, and even if I only knew English, it would not affect my life too much.
Later, I realized that my idea was very wrong: in Japan, I often need to go to the district office where I am located to handle various daily affairs. Japanese is very important at this time.
Once, I went to a coffee shop to order a drink. The waiter saw that I was in a dilemma and changed my mouth to speak English to me, but I still couldn't understand - the English mixed with Japanese accent is really hard to describe! So, I had to learn Japanese again.
In Japan, the full name of master's degree is "Pre-doctoral course", while doctoral degree is called "Post-doctoral course". As the name suggests, they can be integrated, and Japanese master's degree and doctoral degree are often conducted in the same laboratory.
(I entered the Ph.D. in April 2022)
So, if you want to continue your studies in Japan, you just need to communicate with your professor in advance. After briefly put forward future research plans and complete a simple entrance exam, you can continue your further studies.
At present, my doctoral research topic is to develop fish vaccines. Once farmed fish get sick, people usually use antibiotics to treat them, but the disadvantage is that antibiotics may accumulate in the fish's body. Once the fish are served on the dining table, this is a potential threat to the human body.
vaccine focuses more on "prevention" rather than "treatment". So although this is animal research, it ultimately serves humans.I think such research is interesting and can have a positive effect on the progress of human society.
(In August 2020, I interned at the Marine Environmental Protection Company)
In August 2020, through the introduction of a tutor, I went to an internship in a listed Japanese company in marine environmental protection. The founder of the company is also our alumni. During our master's degree, we have a compulsory "studying" credit, which is about 7 days. The so-called "studying" mainly involves visiting and studying, and naturally there will be no salary.
Japanese colleagues are timid and cautious in their work, but their skills are still excellent. Japanese people treat people very kindly and patiently on the surface, but we don’t know what they are really thinking in their hearts.
Once, I did an experiment and guided one of my female teachers, teaching me over and over again. Although I guessed that she had been impatient, her face was still full of real smiles, which eventually made me complete my homework independently.
I have to say that many Japanese people's tolerance and always smiling attitude still make people feel very comfortable.
(July 2022, a hotel in Shiodome, Tokyo)
In Japan, especially in Tokyo, people are very cold. Once, I was walking on the busiest cross street in Shibuya . An old man suddenly fell to the ground and couldn't get up, but no one went to ask about the reason, which was in sharp contrast with the bustling crowd.
In Japan, suicide by lying on tracks is a very common thing. People who have not experienced the tram lying on tracks in person are embarrassed to say that they have lived in Tokyo.
Once, when I was waiting for a tram in Japan, I experienced something personally: someone started to quickly climb over the fence when the tram was coming, and suddenly someone shouted in Chinese: "Don't!"
Later, a Chinese man shouted and pulled the man back from the brink of death, and the Japanese around him seemed to have not seen it.
At that moment, I missed my motherland in particular and made up my mind that after my studies, I must return to my motherland.
(no matter how far you go, the motherland is closest)
Japan is also a country with frequent earthquakes. Perhaps it is because of the mentality of "small earthquakes don't need to run away, big earthquakes can't run away." Japanese people are basically calm when encountering earthquakes.
I remember that I experienced an earthquake in Japan for the first time. I happened to be in the laboratory. After the earthquake, the teacher said to himself: "It's another earthquake." However, the matter at hand did not stop. Indifferent and easy to immerse yourself in your own world. This is generally the case with Japanese people!
At the same time, Japan's temptation is much more than other countries to a certain extent, after all, this is a "paradise for otaku". Many students around me were unable to graduate successfully because they were addicted to various 2Ds, games, etc., and even dropped out of school. This makes me very confused.
(February 2020, Tokyo Akihabara)
Because of the tight pace of life, many people in Japan live a depressed life, and people will become distorted under oppression. In Japan, there are a lot of strange people, such as women's clothing bosses or people with same-sex sexual orientation.
Once, I was in the public bathroom of the station. Halfway through the solution, I suddenly found a well-dressed Japanese man staring at me with longing eyes. I suddenly thought of what I saw in a certain Yin before. The way to encounter a pervert is that you are more perverted than him.
So, I pretended to ask him calmly, "Do you like it?" I hoped to scare him away with this, but unexpectedly, he asked me excitedly, "I know there is a good couple hotel nearby, let's go now!" I was so scared that I lifted my pants and ran away...
The Japanese aesthetics of girls are very different from ours. They generally like the cute and small type. Because my scientific research tasks are quite tight, I don’t have any chance to get in touch with girls, and I am still single now. I hope to return after my studies, return to my motherland, and find someone I love.
(January 2021, a ski resort in Sapporo, Hokkaido)
After the freshness, Japan's study and life make people feel "good mountains and rivers are so boring."
In August 2021, the master's defense was successfully completed. I heard that my classmates were going to climb Mount Fuji , so I decided to follow them. When I arrived at the agreed location, I saw my companion wearing professional outfits, and realized that I was really too hasty: I didn’t have a hiking pole, nor did I bring the warm down jacket that I had at the peak.
So, I quickly bought a hiking pole and two large bags of warm babies and set off on the road in a hurry. The temperature difference between the top of the mountain and the hillside was particularly large. When I arrived at the top of the mountain, I wore a thermal underwear + sweatshirt + sports jacket + several warm babies inside and outside, but I still felt very cold!
Isn’t this what life is like? No preparation is the best preparation. is like before, I just planned to open an aquarium after graduation. Who would have thought that I could study in Japan.
(A hotel at the foot of Mount Fuji after reaching the top of Mount Fuji in August 2021)
We started climbing at Mount Fuji 5 Essence at 20:00 the day before, and reached the top around 3:00 the next day. When the sun jumped out of the east, I felt that everything was worth it. After
, I often travel around. During my trip, I found that hotels are a good cultural carrier. A good hotel can help tourists understand a city faster and more deeply, and designers quietly incorporate local humanistic elements into their guest rooms through just a few strokes.
Now we have arrived in Japan, a classic Japanese-style courtyard, a small flowing water, and a Zen garden, where we watch the four seasons of reincarnation and all things grow. There are also Japanese hotels, which have all kinds of humanized considerations, and have brought the service to the extreme, which is really admirable.
(In July 2022, I was invited as a test sleeper to evaluate a homestay in Gunma)
However, due to the limitations of language and culture, we have very limited channels for obtaining life information. After many stays, I went from looking forward to returning with disappointment with the "planting grass" strategy, I found that most of the "small essays" that were the same for gaining traffic were not credible.
So, I gradually began to record the real hotel stay experience. In addition to providing real help to those in need, on the other hand, probably because I have to make academic reports regularly at school, I am addicted to making such objective and streamlined summary reports.
When I accurately explain the advantages and disadvantages and characteristics of a hotel in 1 minute, I can always gain a full sense of accomplishment in my heart.
After walking different roads and seeing different scenery, I realized that what I miss most is my hometown. In the future, when I finish my studies, I will definitely use the knowledge I have learned to repay the motherland that gave birth to me and raised me.
(I was in Okinawa in May 2021)
Time passes, years change, and my story continues.
Finally, quote a sentence from the big fish and begonia: "We will eventually lose this short life. You don't beware of being bolder, love someone, climb a mountain, and chase a dream."
