In 1667, Jiangnan Province was divided into Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province. Among them, the provincial capital of Anhui Province was established in Anqing House . During the Qing Dynasty rule, Anhui Province governed 8 prefectures and 5 Zhili prefectures. In 1912, after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, our country entered a stage of warlord melee. The continuous wars in various regions have caused great damage to the economies of all regions. In a blink of an eye, it was the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. As the situation stabilized, our country entered a stage of post-war reconstruction and resumption of production. At the same time, a series of projects were established in various parts of Anhui. Due to the need to manage localities, Anhui Province was once divided into Northern Anhui Administrative Office Area and Southern Anhui Administrative Office Area. Among them, the northern Anhui administrative area is located in Hefei, and the southern Anhui administrative area is located in Wuhu.
With the needs of economic development, overly complex zoning is not conducive to economic construction. In the early 1950s, the administrative districts of Northern Anhui and Southern Anhui were merged into Anhui Province. The provincial capital was established in Hefei. Subsequently, a series of special zones were established in Anhui Province, such as Suzhou special zone, Fuyang special zone and so on. Initially, Anqing prefecture governed 1 county-level city and 8 counties, namely: Anqing City, Tongcheng County, Huaining County, Tonglu County, Qianshan County, Taihu County, Susong County, Wangjiang County, Yuexi County.
In 1951, Tonglu County was renamed Hudong County. In 1952, the jurisdiction of Anqing Prefecture was further expanded, and 13 counties were under its jurisdiction, namely: Tongcheng County, Huaining County, Hudong County, Qianshan County, Taihu County, Susong County, Wangjiang County, Yuexi County, Guichi County, Dongliu County, to De County, Qingyang County, Tongling County. In the same year, the county-level city of Anqing was promoted to a prefecture-level city, standing side by side with Anqing Prefecture. In the late 1960s, after all the prefectures in our country were renamed regions, the Anqing prefecture was renamed Anqing area. At this time, the Anqing area has jurisdiction over Anqing City, Tongcheng County, Zongyang County, Huaining County, Wangjiang County, Susong County, Taihu County, Yuexi County, Qianshan County and other places, a total of 1 county-level city, 8 Counties.
In the late 1970s, with the continuous economic development, in order to adapt to the needs of the times, the regions under the jurisdiction of my country's provinces have been gradually adjusted to prefecture-level cities. In addition, some counties have been upgraded to county-level cities, and the scope of relations between some prefecture-level cities has been further expanded. In 1979, Anqing City was promoted to a prefecture-level city for the second time, and Anqing prefecture-level city and Anqing area were side by side. In 1988, the Anqing area was abolished, and the eight counties under its jurisdiction were put under the management of Anqing prefecture-level city. At the same time, Anqing prefecture-level city established three districts: , Yingjiang District , Daguan District, and suburban districts.
In 1996, Tongcheng County in Anqing City was revoked and the Tongcheng county-level city was established. At this time, Anqing City has jurisdiction over 3 districts, 1 county-level city, and 7 counties, for a total of 11 districts and counties. With the continuous development of Anqing City, the urban population has further increased and the urban area has further expanded. In 2005, the suburbs of Anqing City were revoked and Yixiu District was established. In 2015, according to management needs, Zongyang County of Anqing City was placed under the management of Tongling City. In 2019, Qianshan County was revoked, and Qianshan county-level city was established.
