Academician Yuan Longping once proposed a dream of "living cool under the grain". Recently, scientific agriculture has been developed and discovered that many places in my country have reported that the dream of enjoying cool under the grain has been realized. Of course, there are more than this report this year. In recent years, there have been many such reports. After a simple search on scientific agriculture, I saw a lot of search results, and each claimed that I realized the dream of enjoying cool under the grain has been realized. So is it really so easy to realize the cool under the grain?
From the press releases of several current reports, we can find a common point - the plant type is high, and these reports also emphasize that the plant height is very high. From the literal meaning of raising the grass under the grass, that is, there can be shade under the rice, that is, the plant type of rice is larger. So, does the plant type of raising the grass under the grass proposed by Academician Yuan Longping to have a large plant type? Obviously not.
If you simply attribute the dream of raising the cool water under the grass to be large-scale rice, then I think any scientific researcher may find it difficult to agree. From my personal understanding, Academician Yuan Longping's original intention to enjoy the cool water under the wheat includes at least comprehensive indicators such as large plant size, high quality, high yield, and disease resistance. At least the yield and quality are not inferior to the currently promoted rice.
Take the media-reported Sanming " Giant Rice " as an example. The purpose of its cultivation is to create a landscape for supporting tourism projects. That is to say, these rice that enjoys the coolness under the grass does not mainly aim for yield or consumption. The primary purpose is to ornament, and the second is to harvest rice. Moreover, judging from the photos reported by multiple reports, the ideal distance between plant or ear type may still be lacking.
From the perspective of rice breeding, in order to increase the rice's resistance to lodging, the plant height of rice is gradually selected from high to low. However, this giant rice will not be a day to replace the dwarf rice that is now widely promoted. Moreover, if giant rice wants to truly realize the dream of cooling down under the grass, the first thing to solve is that the stems are thick enough and take into account high yields.
There are several reports that the yield of giant rice planted can reach 700 kilograms. However, such data is likely to be the data of the experimental field, which is of little reference significance. For example, in order to prevent lodging, such fields may provide windproof equipment. In order to prevent higher output, fertilization is increased. At the same time, field management is definitely not comparable to ordinary farmland. Therefore, the reference significance of this yield is not very great.
It is not too difficult to achieve coolness under the grass. However, the rare thing is that while enjoying the coolness under the grass, rice also takes into account the advantages of yield, quality, and disease resistance. Otherwise, even if it is promoted, it will not be of much significance. Of course, the advantages of giant rice are still obvious. Thicker stems and higher plant heights will inevitably mean higher biomass, which can make full use of farmland space and more efficient use of photosynthetic efficiency. At the same time, the currently promoted ecological breeding models such as rice-loach, rice-duck, and rice-crawfish can also provide a better planting environment.
