Atago-class destroyer is a type 1 air defense guided missile destroyer of the Japanese Navy. This warship was developed by Japan on the basis of the King Kong-class destroyer. Although it is an "improved type", this class of destroyer is very advanced. It is called The Japanese version of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
In the 1990s, Japan introduced the American Aegis combat system and built the King Kong class to Zhuji. The service of King Kong class destroyers made Japan the second country in the world to have the Aegis system destroyers. However, Japan was not satisfied yet, so it developed the Atago-class destroyer based on its own King Kong-class destroyer based on the American Arleigh Burke-class destroyer Flight II A.
There are currently two Atago-class destroyers in Japan. The first ship was launched in 2004 and launched in 2005. The Atago-class destroyer is 165 meters long, 21 meters wide, has a fully loaded displacement of 10,050 tons, and a maximum speed of 30 knots. The Atago-class destroyer adopts the popular long bow high flat deck as a whole. In appearance, more emphasis is placed on the invisible design. It is equipped with air defense system, close defense system, anti-submarine system, anti-submarine system, Aegis system and electronic warfare system. Although it is known as a guided missile destroyer, it is more like a multi-functional destroyer.
It was the largest air defense destroyer of the navies of the Western Pacific countries when it was in service. However, this title will disappear after the new destroyer is in service.
