Recently, Taiwan's national defense strategy scholar Lin Zhongbin revealed on social media that Taiwan's so-called "Ministry of National Defense" recently secretly invited 12 senior generals with NATO national background to participate in the military thematic research and discussion forum related to the "Russia-Ukraine War, Indo-Pacific Situation". He himself also made a speech. He also posted an electronic poster of this research and discussion forum, showing that this was the "NATO General-level International and Regional Security Seminar" held at the "National Defense University"-Beitou Campus on October 27. As soon as the news came out, the entire Taiwan island media was in a fit of anger and accused it of being a "NATO general leader" initiated by the Tsai Ing-wen authorities. Inviting foreign forces to Taiwan at this sensitive moment is a serious provocation to the mainland and is likely to cause military reunification and a catastrophe. Under media pressure, the Taiwan authorities' defense department - the so-called "Ministry of National Defense", held a press conference to clarify that the seminar does exist, and the location is at the Fuxinggang campus, but there is no so-called "NATO general leader". The invited participants are mainly Italy, Czech , Estonian , Latvia , Lithuanian and 12 international friends from the six countries of South Korea, and are not NATO generals. Although

is so concealed, it also confirms that what Lin Zhongbin said is true. Obviously, this behavior has seriously crossed the line.

As for this incident, there are two main concerns: one is the consideration behind the country to which the invitation belongs; the other is what the "specific content" discussed by the Taiwan authorities and NATO generals.

First look at the first focus. According to the Taiwan Defense Department, the NATO countries invited this time mainly come from six countries: Italy, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and South Korea. The characteristics of these countries are relatively obvious. First, these are not important countries within NATO. The invitation is relatively difficult and easy to become the so-called Taiwan. The breakthrough of military "diplomatic", and in addition to Italy and South Korea, these countries have high anti-China intentions: Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are former Warsaw Pact 4 countries, which are within the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has successfully independent and therefore has natural hostility towards communist ideology. Especially after Russia and Ukraine started fighting, anti-Soviet and anti-Communism within these countries have become politically correct, and they are constantly doing things that erase Soviet history and hurt China and their diplomatic ties. Second, most countries are close to Russia and Ukraine, and have a lot of knowledge about the battlefield situation on Russia and Ukraine, and can provide Taiwan’s defense department with first-hand front-line data for reference research.

Let’s look at the second focus. What is the “specific content” discussed by the Taiwan authorities and NATO generals? According to the answer given by the Taiwan authorities, it is "Russia-Ukraine War and the Indo-Pacific situation". Obviously, what the Taiwan military wants is the direct "experience" that the Russian-Ukraine War can give Taiwan's defense and the strategic advice of NATO generals to "armed defense" to Taiwan. Among them, studying the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is something that Taiwan has been actively engaged in. These studies not only touch on the level of tactics discussion and combat organization, but also directly implement the level of equipment procurement and tactics exercises.

For example, the "Haimas" rocket launcher that Taiwan has purchased from the US military since this year was inspired by the Ukrainian army's " "Haimas ". In the "Hanguang Exercise" held this year, the Taiwan army also significantly increased the appearance of the Stinger missile and javelin anti-tank missile . The so-called "asymmetric combat power" exercise was to see that the Ukrainian army used these two weapons in the defense battle of Kiev. As for whether NATO will provide other suggestions to the Taiwan army, we don't know. But what is certain is that if the experience on the Russian-Ukrainian battlefield is really copied to the Taiwan Strait battlefield by the Taiwan military, it must be unacceptable to the local conditions. There are two reasons:

▲Taiwan will be cut off from the outside world as soon as possible

1. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the possible war of unification of Taiwan are completely different.During the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Western countries supported Ukraine one-sidedly. This is because the battlefield took place at the doorsteps of European countries. Behind Ukraine is the EU countries. Everyone is afraid that Russia, who kills Ukraine, will target it next, so they follow the United States to fight Russia without any effort. But on the one hand, all European countries recognize that it is China's internal affairs, and on the other hand, it is too far from Europe and has very limited influence. European countries cannot abandon bulk economic and trade orders and support Taiwan hysterically.

Second, the combat conditions are completely different. Ukraine is backed by NATO, and the land transportation line is very developed. Russia cannot cut off the weapons transport channels between NATO and Ukraine; and the Taiwan Strait is right next to the mainland, very far away from the United States. The exercise in August this year has shown that the mainland has the ability to cut off Taiwan's external ties. , Taiwan military cannot get external aid supplies like the Ukrainian army, and it will fail very quickly.

Therefore, overall, the behavior of Taiwan’s defense department inviting NATO generals is definitely a political cross-line, but the military significance is not great, and it is impossible to change the Taiwan pattern. It is a completely stupid political provocation.
