According to Observer Network , US Treasury Secretary Yellen recently said that Taiwan's leading position in semiconductors poses a risk to US national security. Yellen said that if the United States relies too much on areas with which geopolitical tensions are present, it will face a "security threat." She took semiconductor as an example and said, "Taiwan is the only source of the world's most advanced semiconductors. In my opinion, this is a resilience risk and a national security risk." Yellen also said that the United States is "too dependent" on mainland China in terms of rare earth , solar panel , etc. In fact, this is not the first time that U.S. officials have linked Taiwan's semiconductor industry to U.S. national security. In July this year, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raymondo issued a warning that the United States relies heavily on overseas chip manufacturers and that 90% of cutting-edge chips are purchased from Taiwan, China, posed a national security risk.
This is one of the clear evidences of the United States' hegemony over the world. It does not allow any country or region to master products that are enough to threaten the US supply chain. Whoever threatens the United States will use various means to threaten and induce the other party to make concessions, so that the United States can better reap benefits and better ensure its safe supply chain. There are certain reasons why the United States speculates Taiwan’s position in the semiconductor industry and threatens US national security.
First of all, the United States does not trust Taiwan at all. It has seen its crisis in semiconductor supply. Its domestic "chip" manufacturing industry has long declined and cannot guarantee the United States' self-sufficiency at critical moments. It is precisely this reason. On August 9 this year, US President Biden signed the "2022 Chip and Technology Act" ("Chip Act"), aiming to promote chip manufacturing to "return" to the local area through huge industrial subsidies and domineering clauses to curb competition, involving a capital scale of up to US$280 billion. In addition to financial support, the speculation of the supply chain crisis in the semiconductor industry is a political preparation, and it uses external threats to promote the development of the domestic industry. This is one of the common methods to mobilize national sentiment.
Secondly, the United States is saying it for Taiwan, and is putting pressure on Taiwan in disguise. Taiwan has mastered the lifeblood of the boss America, which is inexcusable. Then, Taiwan must make some compensation accordingly, for example, TSMC will go to the United States to build factories to fully ensure the "chip" supply chain in the United States. Now TSMC is building a factory in the United States, but it is not very competitive because the manufacturing cost in the United States is prohibitive, and the cost of manufacturing chips in the United States is 50% more expensive than in Taiwan. The same product is 50% more expensive to produce in the United States, so it naturally cannot be sustained. Even if it is temporarily compromised under the pressure of the United States, various problems will arise in the future. But it is undeniable that the United States is seizing the dominance of Taiwan's semiconductor industry.
Finally, the United States is talking about what mainland China says, and the United States has always said it is worried about geopolitical uncertainty. The implication is that if mainland China suddenly takes action against Taiwan, the supply chain of the US semiconductor industry will suffer a catastrophe. In fact, this is warning the mainland that it is best to keep the status quo of cross-straits unchanged and not to unilaterally change the status quo of the Taiwan Strait. Otherwise, the United States would never stand idly by, after all, this is related to the interests of the United States. Of course, it is also to give Taiwan another reassurance, that is, the United States will not ignore Taiwan. After all, Taiwan’s “chip” supply is indispensable to the United States at present. Mainland China naturally won’t care about small jiujiu like the United States. We will promote the process of cross-strait reunification according to our established plans.
However, Taiwan authorities are still superstitious about the United States helping Taiwan fight against the mainland. Another core reason why the United States is now raising the problem of Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain is that the United States wants to get rid of this situation and wants to find supply chains around the world. In this way, if something happens to Taiwan, the United States will not be in a hurry. Moreover, the United States wants to take away Taiwan's control over semiconductors. Now TSMC has been coerced and tempted to build a factory in the United States, and the United States will dare to completely bring TSMC to the United States in the future. Therefore, the United States has never considered Taiwan’s life or death, it is considering its own interests not to be damaged.
So the Taiwan authorities should wake up and don’t be sold by the United States, and count the money for it. We must see clearly the true face of the United States. It will not take risks for Taiwan. Taiwan follows the United States to act and is destined to have no dignity, no right to speak, and is exploited and trampled on. In this regard, the only way for Taiwan to break the deadlock is to return to the embrace of the motherland. If you rely on your motherland, Taiwan can be proud.
