The federal government may consider lifting the upper limit on the number of immigrants!

According to the latest report from The Australian, at next month’s Employment and Skills Summit, unions, businesses and the government will discuss whether to lift the immigration cap to solve the serious problem of labor shortages!

html Labor force statistics for July highlighted the shrinking supply of available labor, with the unemployment rate reaching a post-1970s low after the key unemployment indicator fell to 3.4% in July.

Australia's youth unemployment rate fell by almost a percentage point to 7%, the lowest level since the Australian Bureau of Statistics began measuring it in 1978.

Bjorn Jarvis, director of labor statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, said, "The decline in the unemployment rate in July reflects increasing labor market tightness, including high job vacancies and ongoing labor shortages."

Jarvis pointed out that the number of unemployed people in July is now 474,000, which is less than the 480,000 job vacancies in May.

To help fill labor shortages across the economy, the federal government is considering increasing immigration numbers to 180,000 to 200,000 a year ahead of the budget on October 25.

Home Office figures show the number of permanent skilled migration visas issued has fallen sharply in recent years.

In the three financial years before the pandemic, the number of visas issued averaged 105,600, or about 20,000 fewer than the annual average over the previous three years. With borders closed in 2020-21, only 79,620 permanent skilled migration visas have been issued. The number of temporary skilled visa holders in Australia has also been on a downward trend over the past decade.

Skills and Training Minister Mr O'Connor said there was a "huge labor shortage" that had to be filled. He said he was eyeing temporary visa holders, international students and holidaymakers to fill gaps in some industries.

In addition, the Minister of Immigration said that in order to cooperate with the relaxation of visa quotas, 180 staff have been added to help speed up visa approval, and more than 200 employees are on the way to implement the government's visa relaxation policy!
