Cyprus Minister of Health Michalis Hadjipantela said on Monday, November 7 that since 2020, Cyprus has spent more than 200 million euros to deal with Covid-19. He introduced his department budget on the House Finance Committee, outlining a 5% increase in 2023 over the previous year, totaling 1.1 billion euros.

Hadjipantela explained Covid-19 expenditure that most people use to purchase vaccine and free distribution of drugs to fight the epidemic, as well as to purchase materials and services for rapid testing and PCR testing for free to the public, etc.

The government purchased from private hospitals to provide free care for the public and help patients after the COVID-19 patients also account for a portion of the 200 million euros spent by the state to deal with the pandemic. According to Hadjipantela, 1.8 million doses of vaccine have been distributed to the public for free since the vaccination program began.

Explaining the 2023 budget, the minister said it accounts for 11% of the state’s total budget, similar to the past two years. A new national laboratory will be built, with a regular budget of €1.1 million and a development of €7.2 million.

Budget revenue is expected to be 293 million euros, of which 266 million euros are used to second employee compensation to the National Health Services Organization (Okypy).
