The Rio Grande is the fifth longest river in North America , flowing through the United States and Mexico . It is the boundary river between the United States and Mexico. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Mexican officials found the victims near Eagle Pass, Texas, following days of heavy rain in the area. According to a CBP statement, of the nine victims, U.S. officials found six and Mexican teams found three. It was one of the deadliest drownings on the U.S.-Mexico border in recent memory. Officials on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border are now searching for more victims.
The weather service said the depth of the Rio Grande was just over 90 centimeters at the beginning of the week and exceeded 1.5 meters on September 1, with the water flowing five times faster than normal.
CBP said U.S. crews rescued 37 people from the river and detained 16 people, while Mexican officials detained 39 people.
CBP did not say which countries the migrants came from or provide any other information about rescue and search operations.
Francisco Contreras, a member of the Civil Defense Organization in Coahuila state on the Mexican border, said that among the bodies recovered from the river by Mexican authorities were a man and a pregnant woman whose nationality was unknown. They did not release information about the third body.
