After the "nine-in-one" elections on the island, the DPP couldn't wait to collude with external interference forces. According to media reports on the island, Asimakopoulou, Vice Chairman of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee, led a delegation to visit Taiwan.
Faced with the visit of the European Parliament delegation, the Taiwan authorities seemed particularly excited. Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen said that this is the first time that the European Parliament's "International Trade Committee" has sent an official delegation to visit Taiwan, which has far-reaching significance for the development of bilateral relations and economic and trade exchanges. Tsai Ing-wen also claimed that Taiwan has the ability and willingness to strengthen cooperation with international "democratic front partners" and hopes that Taiwan can further deepen its "partnership" with the EU and jointly build a resilient "democratic alliance front."
Currently, under the attack of high inflation and energy crisis, the risk of economic recession in Europe has further intensified. At the same time, the "Inflation Reduction Act" passed by the United States also puts European industries at risk of being hollowed out. In order to alleviate economic pressure, major European economies have begun to learn from their mistakes and seek more cooperation with China. After German Chancellor Scholz visited China, French President Macron also spread rumors that he will visit China early next year. As the EU's two leading leaders have moved closer to China, the EU's attitude towards China has also undergone some subtle changes. Against this background, the European Parliament delegation also expressed a more cautious stance.
Asimakopoulou said that Taiwan and the EU share many values, including "democracy, freedom, rule of law," etc. The EU hopes to continue to deepen mutually beneficial and mutually beneficial cooperative relations with Taiwan, and also hopes to have more cooperation with Taiwan in the international supply chain. Asimakopoulou also claimed that the Taiwanese people have the right to choose the lifestyle they want, and the European Parliament will fully support Taiwan's participation in international organizations.
But what is different from the past is that Asimakopoulou did not clamor for topics such as "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan". Instead, he said straight to the point that the EU upholds the "one China" policy, but also believes that the status quo across the Taiwan Strait should not be unilaterally changed. The EU opposes any use of force or "coercion" to change the status quo, as well as any economic "coercion".
However, even though Asimakopoulou clearly stated his support for the "One China" policy, it still cannot change the nature of the European Parliament's blatant collusion with "Taiwan independence elements" and gross interference in China's internal affairs. In response, Mao Ning, spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the one-China principle is a recognized norm of international relations and the political foundation of China-EU relations. China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges between the EU and Taiwan, and urges the EU to abide by the one-China principle and be cautious in its words and deeds on Taiwan-related issues to avoid serious interference in China-EU relations.
At a time when wars are ongoing, the epidemic is raging, and the energy crisis is ongoing, the international situation is in turmoil, and China-EU relations are also facing a series of uncertainties. Not long ago, European Council President Michel stated during his visit to China that the EU adheres to the one-China policy, respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will not interfere in China's internal affairs. However, looking back at the EU's current performance, apart from verbal support for the "One China" policy, there has been almost no substantial improvement. Under such circumstances, how can China and the EU increase political mutual trust and deepen cooperation in various fields?
China sincerely hopes that the EU can maintain strategic autonomy, not be misled by ideological disputes, examine China from a pragmatic and rational perspective, correct its mentality, respect facts, strengthen exchanges and communication, consolidate and expand the existing basis for cooperation, promote the stability and long-term development of China-EU relations, and refrain from interfering in issues involving China's core interests, let alone interfering in China's internal affairs, so as not to mislead others or ourselves, and damage the common interests shared by China and the EU.
