According to Egyptian media reports on November 10, the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia cooperates with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to fund the Leadership, Management and Governance Program (LMG) of three American universities (Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University and Ohio State University ) to improve the leadership capabilities of universities in Ethiopia.
Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, interim office of the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia talked about the important partnership with Dr. Samuel Kifle, Minister of State for Education of Ethiopia.
Ambassador Jacobson said when talking about the importance of long-term cooperation between the two sides in the field of education, "We are investing in education here because this is the key to unlocking Ethiopian potential and an important manifestation of the friendship between Ethiopian and the United States."
Secretary of State Samuel echoed this view in his speech. He said "Leadership, management and governance programs are very important to the construction of the university system and also help ensure that Ethiopian graduates have access to higher quality education, and the Ethiopian university system has been strengthened." The first round of the
LMG project trained 27 higher education administrators from 19 public universities, representing all four generations of public universities in Ethiopia, including 9 university presidents, 16 vice presidents and 2 senior officials of the Ministry of Education. participants attended a workshop at Addis Ababa in August 2022, and then traveled to the United States to visit Texas Tech, Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University.
This project provides participants with an opportunity to understand current trends in higher education leadership, management and governance issues around the world. They share best learning practices with American institutions and learn from their American counterparts. In addition to gaining experience in academic affairs, research, and innovation, university leaders learn more about U.S. university management and student services, as well as technical management and information systems. participants returned to Ethiopia to create a model suitable for the Ethiopia higher education environment.
The U.S. Embassy allocated $502,000 to the consortium’s leading university to develop the capacity of Ethiopian higher education administrators to improve the quality of Ethiopian higher education and strengthen the partnership between the U.S. and Ethiopian University. The second batch of
LMG will select another 25 public university leaders who will participate in similar projects in Addis Ababa and the United States in the summer of 2023. application will be open in December 2022.
