On Thursday (October 13, 2022), a ship carrying students home from school in Cambodia's Mekong River sank, killing at least 14 children.
According to British media reports on October 14, 2022, the police said that the accident occurred at around 7 pm local time on Thursday (October 13, 2022) along the Mekong River in the southeast of the capital Phnom Penh. All victims were between 11 and 14 years old, no one was wearing life jackets, and two students and two adult ship operators survived the tragedy .
It is reported that the students come from Zhanling Island by the river. They take boats to and from school almost every day during the rainy season. During the dry season, the river has almost no water and can be crossed on foot.
Provincial Police Chief Chhoeun Sochet said in a social media post: "This case was caused by overloading, carelessness and lack of life jacket protection for the ship owner." He also said that the rising water levels caused by heavy rain caused the disaster.
The authorities said that when the accident occurred, the ship entered water about 50 meters from the shore. Local police chief Am Thou said that when the ship began to sink, students were asked to move to seats in the middle or stern of the ship, but as they walked back, the ship became unbalanced and sunk.
One of the survivors said that although she was a few meters away from the river, she could not swim. When the boat sank, she jumped out and floated to the river. Deputy Sheriff Dim Samrith said: "We feel very sorry that such an incident should not have happened."
