This international commentary by Uncle Mu is to analyze a Western poll on the Ukrainian issue.
On October 14, the University of Cambridge in the UK and a public opinion company jointly issued a poll that measured the public opinion of the war between 25 major countries in the world against Russia-Ukraine, and made many interesting new discoveries from it.
However, a basic conclusion is that nearly eight months after the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, citizens of Western core alliance countries had little interest in Russia's concessions, and the vast majority of people still strongly support the maintenance, frequent strengthening and expanding military and economic sanctions on Moscow.
This should be considered good news for Ukraine. After all, what Ukrainians are most worried about is that as time goes by, the support of Western allies will weaken.
Nowadays, public opinion does not seem to support the reduction of aid to Ukraine, but may instead push governments to increase aid.
This poll was made from August 24 to September 22. The survey found that
has a "core group" of 10 countries in 13 Western or English-speaking countries - France, Germany, Sweden , Denmark, Spain, Italy, Greek , Hungary, Poland , the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada - supporting the maintenance of economic sanctions against Russia.
In these 10 countries, the people generally expressed high support for the sanctions against Russia. The approval ratings ranged from lows of 57% or 58% in France and Germany to 60%, 62% and 65% in Canada, the United States and Poland to highs of more than 70% in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark.
In addition, the majority of the population - 62% in Poland, 57% in Sweden, 50% in the UK, 40-50% in France, Germany, Spain and the United States - believe that the existing sanctions against Russia by Western countries are "not severe enough" and should continue to be strengthened in the future.
What is more worth mentioning is that many citizens of Western countries are willing to pay more living costs to support Ukraine. For example, Denmark 66% and Britain 63% support sanctions against Russia in the context of their own efforts.
The people of the other three countries - Greece, Hungary and Italy - do not support sanctions and are not willing to strengthen sanctions on Russia. They are exceptions.
For example, Greece and Hungary maintain support for sanctions against Russia at 37% and 32%, half of that of Western countries.
For poll analysts, the most interesting thing about this poll is that
Most Western respondents have little interest in the compromise with Russia on how to end the war.
Investigation Asked: If Russia agrees to stop fighting and abandon all, most, part, or all of Ukraine's territorial gains, will they support making various concessions to Moscow, such as ending sanctions, sovereignty over Crimea and Ukraine's guarantee not to join NATO ?
Only 13% of respondents in France support recognizing Russia's sovereignty over Crimea. In Germany, the corresponding figure is 17%; Sweden is 13%, Spain is 18%; Poland is 12%, Britain is 10% and the United States is 15%.
Greece, Hungary and Italy are more likely to be inclined to give in to Russia: For example, 31% of Greece respondents, 28% of Hungary respondents and 23% of Italy agree with recognition of Russia's sovereignty over Crimea.
outside the West -
Survey also covers Brazil , Mexico , Turkey , Egypt , Saudi Arabia , India, Japan, Indonesia , Thailand, Kenya , Nigeria and South Africa and other Asia, Africa and Latin countries, and found that their attitude towards Russia is generally more tolerant.
Among all 25 countries, only citizens of Saudi , India and Indonesian (24%, 28% and 26%) believe that the West should be more responsible for the Russian-Ukrainian war than Russia.
But the gap between the views on the West and Russia is not too big.
For example, the three countries believe that Russia should be responsible for the war first is 23%, 27% and 15%.
