According to the British Mirror, on October 22 local time, a 10-year-old boy from in southeastern Brazil accidentally shot himself in the head while stealing his uncle's gun. The family then rushed Gabriel to the hospital, but the little boy unfortunately died of gunshot wounds.
It is reported that the fatal incident occurred in a rural manor in Juatuba, Brazil. The boy was named Gabriel Gustavo de Sosa Mota. The family was holding a family gathering at the time of the incident. Gabriel was playing in a room with his cousin, and he stood on a stool and took his uncle's gun from the top of the closet.
The boy ignored his cousin's advice and started playing with a gun, but accidentally shot himself in the head. The adults rushed into the room as soon as they heard the gunshots and saw Gabriel lying on the floor with a head injury. They died after being sent to the hospital for rescue. Later, the police confiscated the gun for investigation.
Uncle, a gendarmerie, told police: "After arriving at the manor, he placed his belongings in the room where the incident occurred. His gun was stored on the top of the wardrobe, put a holster and locked, which is generally difficult to detect."
On Monday, Gabriel's school suspended all courses so that faculty and students could go to mourn. "May the family, friends and teachers of this model student be comforted by him, who has left eternal memories in the hearts of everyone who is fortunate to know him," the school said in a statement.
Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of gun deaths in the world. According to data from NGO Souda Paz, as of July 2022, the number of people registered for gun licenses was 673,000. Souda Paz estimates that Brazil has 2.7 million private guns as of July 2022.
