Recently, in the capital of Zimbabwe Harare , China's largest construction aid project in southern Africa was built by Shanghai Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. The Zimbabwe Parliament Building project with a construction area of approximately 32,000 square meters has officially completed its completion acceptance. The acceptance team fully affirmed the completion and quality of the project. This is also the largest and highest-standard foreign aid project implemented by Shanghai Construction Engineering to date.
As a landmark project for to implement the "Belt and Road" initiative and enhance the relations between China and Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Parliament Building project has received great attention since its construction started in September 2018. The Zimbabwe Parliament Building is located on the prayer mountain northwest of the capital Harare, with a total construction area of about 32,000 square meters and an area of over 80,000 square meters, consisting of a 44-story conference hall and a 6-story office building.
The overall building has an enclosed layout, with the conference hall part in a circular layout, and the parliamentary office part surrounding it on the west side, with a corridor connecting the two. The interior of the conference hall is mainly composed of the main conference hall, the second conference hall, and several functional conference rooms. The parliamentary office building mainly consists of an indoor garage and service rooms on the first floor, a multi-functional hall, kitchen, restaurant and offices on the second floor, various offices on the third to fifth floors, and the presidential office, parliamentary heads and ministerial officials on the sixth floor. The facade of the Parliament Building adopts modern design techniques, and the overall stretch is grand, highlighting the characteristics of legislative buildings. At the same time, it is also equipped with outdoor squares, falling water landscapes, parking lots, outdoor roads, etc.
In the future, Zimbabwe’s Cabinet and House of Representatives and Senate will all work here. Office and meeting conditions have been greatly improved, and it will become a local landmark building and drive the development of the region.
The project started in September 2018, completed the main structure acceptance in January 2020, and then entered the decoration stage of construction. Since late January 2020, the rapid spread of the COVID-19 epidemic around the world has had a great impact on project construction. Domestic personnel dispatch and material and equipment shipments have been delayed, local workers on site have been dismissed for a long time, and project personnel have been infected with the epidemic and construction has been suspended. The
project team worked hard to overcome various difficulties and resume work and production as soon as possible: it organized the ordering and shipment of materials through multiple channels and methods, mobilized a group of professional construction personnel from China, formulated a detailed anti-epidemic plan, implemented closed-loop management of the site, and did everything possible to speed up construction. progress and minimize the impact of the epidemic on the construction period. Finally, with the efforts of all personnel, the Zimbabwe Parliament Building project completed all construction tasks on May 27 this year.
During the construction period, more than 220 Chinese managers and technicians were invested in the project construction, and a total of was provided with more than 800 job opportunities for local people.The sand, gravel, cement and other construction materials used in the project are all purchased locally, which greatly promotes the development of the local construction materials market.
The project has also received great attention from the Zimbabwean government. President Mnangagwa has inspected it many times and praised the new parliament building as China’s precious gift to Zimbabwe. When he inspected the project in November last year, he expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese government and enterprises, and expressed his admiration for the construction team's efforts to overcome the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic and actively resume production and work. Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun and others also visited the site and fully affirmed the quality of the project and the hard work of the Chinese and foreign construction parties.
