The head is round, the forehead is raised, and the mouth is upturned, as if he is smiling. The porpoise, known as the "smiling angel", was once on the verge of extinction. The scientific investigation results in 2017 showed that the number of Yangtze River porpoise was about 1,012, and the population was critically endangered.
In order to prevent the cute porpoise from disappearing from the waters of the Yangtze River, there is a group of people who are always committed to finding the footprints of porpoises and working hard for their lives to protect the porpoise's underwater habitat. The first batch of "big river recommendation officers" this time, Hao Yujiang, associate researcher at the Institute of Aquatic Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and executive deputy secretary-general of Wuhan Baizan Dolphin Conservation Foundation, is one of them.
The mountains and clouds dance with each other, and the rivers of green water play the piano. After 2006, 2012 and 2017, the Yangtze River Porpoise Science Expedition Team set sail for the fourth time on September 19 this year.

Facing the daily rising sun, eight scientific expedition ships carried more than 120 personnel from more than 20 scientific research institutes and related units, and started construction in groups and sections of the Yangtze River Basin in the Yangtze River Basin. The number and distribution of Yangtze River porpoise populations were investigated for the main stream of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Dongting Lake, Poyang Lake , and some Yangtze River tributaries and Fan River, and simultaneously carried out a series of work such as surveys on the habitat of finless porpoises.
The scientific research work of finding, investigating and protecting the finless porpoise is very familiar to Hao Yujiang. This year, it is his third time to participate and lead the team as the captain for the second time. In addition to his love for the finless porpoise itself, Hao Yujiang's years of research also gave him a more scientific and deeper understanding of this group of creatures.
"As a unique freshwater cetacean in the Yangtze River, it is an important indicator species for evaluating the health of the Yangtze River ecosystem." Hao Yujiang told Red Star News reporters that at present, 8 Yangtze River porpoise nature reserves, 3 natural relocation reserves, and 3 artificial breeding groups have been built in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, laying a solid foundation for the protection of Yangtze River porpoise species and population recovery.
Although the protection of the porpoise has been going on for many years, Hao Yujiang is still worried: "The Yangtze River's 'Ten Year Fishing Ban' has been implemented for less than two years. As the top creature in the ecosystem, the porpoise will not grow as fast as fish. The growth of the porpoise has a lag effect and requires a gradual accumulation process."

In addition, Hao Yujiang added that since the repair and improvement of the porpoise's living environment is a long process, and due to factors such as the long breeding cycle of the porpoise and the low survival rate of young porpoises, the recovery of the natural population of the Yangtze River may take a long time, and it is difficult to expect large-scale growth in the short term. We need a certain degree of patience and determination.
once again led the team to go to the scientific expedition of the Yangtze River Porpoise, which further enhanced Hao Yujiang's confidence in the protection of the Yangtze River Porpoise. He told the Red Star News reporter that compared with the previous scientific expeditions, the environment in the Yangtze River has indeed undergone significant changes. The natural coastlines on both sides of the shore have increased significantly, and the river water is also very clear. It turns out that the illegal docks that were scattered are gone. The fishing boats and Maze Array that were seen everywhere were nowhere to be seen, and there are no sewage outlets directly discharged from the Yangtze River. At the same time, the volunteer organizations for protecting porpoises along the Yangtze River have brought greater hope to help protect the porpoise. The current living environment of the porpoise has been much better.
Every time I walk on the waves, I just want to guard the water paradise on which the plunder depends for survival. Hao Yujiang specifically appealed: "Learn the 'family' of the Yangtze River porpoise and protect the ecology of the Yangtze River. Let's work together to make the mother river and the Yangtze River's 'smile' bloom more beautifully!"
