Wuliang Suhai is the largest wild mute swan breeding ground discovered in China so far. Zhang Changlong, 69, grew up on the beach in Wuliangsu. He has been guarding swans for nearly 20 years as a non-staff caretaker. His biggest wish is that children can also see the spectacular scenery of Wuliangsuhai with hundreds of birds flying high. "Hardcore Inner Mongolia, Our Spirit", please listen today: "Drawing" the spirit - ""Bird Chief" Zhang Changlong".

Every March, as soon as the mute swans fly back to Wuliangsuhai, Zhang Changlong will paddle his raft through the reed swamps all day long.

Today’s Wuliangsu sea water is clear and full of fish, and hundreds of birds are flying high. But in the mid-1980s, industrial wastewater, domestic sewage, and farmland receding water continued to be discharged, and the quality of Wuliangsuhai Sea deteriorated sharply. At that time, Zhang Changlong was the famous "Bird Chief" and his marksmanship was famous far and wide. Until one day, he served as a guide for several professors of and at Inner Mongolia University and was deeply touched.

Zhang Changlong: "Old professors said that if Wuliangsuhai is not protected or managed now, the sea will stink, the birds will disappear, and the water fish will disappear. If you don't protect the birds, you won't protect the swans. In the future, children will only know when they come out. Name, no birds were seen. Later, our people stopped hunting."

Zhang Changlong changed from a "bird hunter" to a "bird protector". When Wuliangsuhai Wetland Reserve was established in 1998, Zhang Changlong took the initiative to apply and became an unpaid non-staff management and care worker. After learning about bird protection and taking thick notes, the locals jokingly called Lao Zhang "Brother Bird."

Zhang Changlong: "I knew which nest was newly added, how many days it takes to incubate, how many days it takes to lay an egg, and how long it takes for the cub to fly. Later, I watched until the 33rd to 34th day to leave the nest. Understand. They are doing better protection work.”

From January to March every year, Zhang Changlong welcomes the return of the beautiful elves at Wuliangsu Beach. When the last mute swan is sent away in November, he will return. Start looking forward to seeing each other next year. Now that the sea water in Wuliangsu has improved, there are fish again, and the number of swans is increasing year by year.
