Roxy the Raccoon has just become a mother of four. Of course, she got to show off her pride and joy to her favorite person, Brittany Seidel.

So the family trotted out to the familiar lawn of the house, where Brittany had given the raccoon a lot of love and affection even before she became its rightful owner.

For those unfamiliar with these delightful bandit-looking creatures, Live Science describes raccoons as round, furry creatures with bushy tails and a black fur mask covering their eye area.

Peta explains that because humans have taken over much of their traditional habitat, the curious and opportunistic raccoons have learned to coexist with humans, making encounters extremely common.

Although these animals may look cute, they can be very ferocious when approached as they may view humans as a threat. But since Roxie has been around friendly, kind humans for so long, she's somewhat used to her two-legged neighbors. So where did it all start?

Brittany purchased the house in April 2021. The previous owners were known for caring for the wildlife that roamed the area. In a viral TikTok video that has racked up 2,310 views, she explained that a raccoon knocks on the door every night for dinner. “I didn’t fully trust them until about a week after moving in,” Brittany told The Dodo.

To be safe, she still leaves food for the creatures every night. This was new to her as she hadn't left anything for wildlife before, but since the animals were used to this routine, she was sad to end the tradition. During the first week, she didn't hear anything strange happening.

One night she was making dinner when she heard something knocking, almost like a knocking on the door. She looked and there it was - the raccoon from the previous owner's story. The animal was a little reserved at first, but soon realized that Brittany was friendly. It begins accepting food directly from the human's hand and within a few days develops a strong bond.

Brittany soon began filming these encounters, gaining 416.9K followers on TikTok, with people loving their budding friendship. She decided to give the animal Roxie and began pampering her with grapes, dog food, and even a kiddie pool filled with water and berries.

Peta said raccoons are well known for their unusual habit of "washing" their food or hands in water. In fact, the scientific name for raccoons is Procyon lotor, and the Latin word "lotor" means "washing machine."

Many theories have been proposed to explain this interesting ritual, but most scientists believe it has to do with raccoons' innate tendency to forage near water sources.

The visits continued until one day Brittany noticed a change in the raccoon and its eating habits. Roxie started coming many times a day, not just at night.

"In early May, I realized that Roxie looked like she was breastfeeding," she said. "One of her typical mornings, she showed up in the hallway with four babies!" The raccoon, which had also given birth to a baby the year before, still visited with its mother. Now it will have four additional siblings.

The tiny raccoon family now lives in the woods behind Brittany's house, and they seem to consider her part of their nursery. According to National Geographic , young raccoons often stay high in tree holes for the first two months or so of their lives. Later, mother and babies moved to the ground, allowing the pups to explore on their own.

This relationship not only benefits Roxie; It also helped Brittany achieve the path she wanted to take in life. "It really showed me how much I wanted to work with animals," she said. "I'm currently applying for a license to be able to run a non-profit wildlife rescue operation."
